Why is this book so small (5" wide x 7" tall x 1/4" thick) AND so expensive (14 bucks)?

Excellent book BUT… why is it so small (5" wide x 7" tall x 1/4" thick) (100 pages) AND so expensive (14 bucks)? It is barely a pamphlet. There is no earthly reason to price this book at $14. How about half that, so people can afford it? Not only that, this is one of a series of nine books. Buyers are supposed to fork over $14 x 9 = $126 to learn how to learn about Episcopal/Anglican? Who has that kind of money? Is not this series subsidized by the Episcopal Church at large so that it can be be cheaper to the Buyer? $126 is text-book extortion prices. How about putting all nine parts in one anthology and charging $30? Get real and get cracking.

Volume 2 was hard to find. It is The Episcopal Story: Birth and Rebirth, is not out yet, and is priced at $14 also. Yikes!

The authors seem to kowtow to 'young' Christian seekers and they use language that makes them sound like a pathetically 'uncool'

I am stunned that a book that purports to expound upon Anglicanism and the Episcopal Church is almost void of any theological principles save those expressed in the New Age movement. There seems to be in this book a sense of shame around using the name of Jesus. As a life-long Episcopalian, there is nothing here that will help you grow in your relationship to God - neither Father, nor Son, nor Holy Spirit. The authors seem to kowtow to 'young' Christian seekers and they use language that makes them sound like a pathetically 'uncool' adult who is trying desperately to fit in with a young crowd. Bottom line: this book is lame.

I am glad I became an Episcopalian before I read "The Episcopal Way".

I thought the Episcopal Way would delve into Jesus, the Nicene Creed, the Christ Centeredness of our Liturgy. It did not. It barely mentions Jesus, the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit. I joined the Episcopal Church to continue to grow in Christ. That is happening. But the Episcopal Way is not happening. The book is void of ideas that can transcend the mundane and point to Christ. In sum, I am glad I became an Episcopalian before I read "The Episcopal Way".

Matter-of-fact narrative gives way to descriptive elegance

Annie Dillard's Tickets For A Prayer Wheel is an impressive and highly recommended collection of lucid poetry, elegantly written in free verse, concerning the mundane, the natural, and the mystical. Matter-of-fact narrative gives way to descriptive elegance of brevity in this inspirational work. Deciduous trees/have dominion. But look on bark;/molds make fruiting bodies/out of air. Winner/take all. Grab/a handle. Earth/rolls down like dolphins dive,/headlong to dark.

Incredible and Off Kilter

Very strange stuff is contained in this hard to find book. Annie Dillard is famous for her Pilgrim at Tinker Creek novel. However, I enjoyed this earlier work much more than anything else I have read by her. The poems range from thought provoking, to totally off the wall. Hardly a one of the poems are short of enjoyable. The title poem is worthy of its place on the cover, it struck a chord with me immediately.

You see the roots, bulging upward

Having read everything Annie Dillard has published, I finally was able to read this book of her early work.
In it, in each, roots which could not be contained, which wanted more soil.
Her work was so deep and so wide, and I found in its pieces such ambition to say more. And of course, she did say more, so very eloquently and courageously. My most favorite of her work being Holy The Firm.
But these poems show the early light which bloomed later into awesome briliiance..Poems which struck me most in this collection were:
Feast Days - Thanksgiving to Christmas...understanding the holiness of the ground, of the lives of ancestors:
Mound-builders/basketmakers,/cliff-dwellers -/all are gone to the sandhills./Remember Sand Creek!/Remember Wounded knee!...

Arches and Shadows:
before I left. In Trieste I said Promise/you'll always love me, I actually said that,....

Farmer's Daughter: Remember the flood that killed father:/when the water went down, the chickens/lay muddy and drowned. Oh we watch/the weather here on earth; we don't forget....

The personal leads to the universal in these early words.
I'm grateful to have finally seen the beginning work of a genius!

Researchers constantly find that reading to children is valuable in a variety of ways, not least of which are instilling a love of reading and improved reading skills. With better parent-child bonding from reading, you child will also be more emotionally secure and able to relate better to others. Intellectual performance will expand as well. Spending time together watching television fails as a substitute.
To help other parents apply this advice, as a parent of four I consulted an expert, our youngest child, and asked her to share with me her favorite books that were read to her as a young child. Little Cloud was one of her picks.
Little Cloud decides to travel to see what is on the other side of the mountain. Little Cloud's friends are concerned for his safety. He may get lost. Little Cloud floats away anyway. He runs into the eye of Mean Mountain who tells him to go away. Little Cloud floated past him because Little Cloud was not afraid.
On the other side he found a valley where everything was drying up. A tree asked for some rain, but Little Cloud was too small to help. Little Cloud learned that Mean Mountain kept all of the clouds away. Little Cloud decided to help.
He grabbed a ride on a airplane's tail until he got over the ocean. There he found lots of clouds, and told them about the valley and Mean Mountain. They filled up with water and went to Mean Mountain who tossed rocks at them. Little Cloud let out a bolt of lightning that knocked off Mean Mountain's nose, and the clouds went on to rain on the valley. Little Cloud stayed there from then on and lived happily, becoming a bigger cloud.
The book encourages a sense of healthy adventure in a child. One should not be concerned about vague fears, but go to find out for yourself.
The book also suggests that others may need your help. As a child, you may not be able to do much alone, but by talking with others you may be able to gather additional allies who can make a difference.
Mean Mountain is the archetypal bully, all bluff and bluster with little substance. You can talk about how to handle bullies in the context of this story with your child.

Little Cloud is a scary book!

First off, I do love this book. I still have and cherish my childhood copy. This book did however, freak me out! Mean Mountain was sooooo scary, and when his nose fell off and he cried (the tear is in the shape of some sort of key)I felt very sorry for poor old "Mean Mountain". The animals in the vally were so sad and emaciated! The whole book left me feeling a little sad, but doesn't bravery include a little bit of loss? That was the lesson I learned from this wonderful book.

This book was my childhood favorite and I still love it! The storyline is fun and the pictures are cute. Even years later, I still remember and cherish this book because of its simplicity and uniqueness. Definitely a must-have for anyone with kids!

The Old Man and the Afternoon Cat

I fondly remember reading this book as a child. The illustrations are bright and simple as is the text. The grumpy song in the front was a favorite of mine to sing when I was having a bad day, as was the happy ending song on a good day. I was comforted in knowing two things: I wasn't the only person to have bad days, and things would get better just as they did for the old man. I look forward to reading this story to my children in the future.

Classic Childrens Book Good Condition

This is a classic book my parents use to read to me when I was a child which is why I bought it. It tells the story of a simple old gentleman and a friendly cat. Its a very cute story for any cat lover!

The book itself is no more than 10-15 pages long and provides good pictures for young childern to look at and simple reading for children who are first learning. I would highly recommend this book to any parents who are looking for a good childrens book.

Goldman has gathered a well-balanced collection of words, quotes, and stories for those of us in need of healing (whether we realize we need healing or not!). Each word consists of two pages in the book, a perfect length for our busy world. Supplementing the words is a list of suggestions for using the book: journaling, meditation, prayer, as inspiration for art and music, etc. My favorite of Caren's suggestions is considering "Why did this word choose me?" as a counterpoint to "Why did I choose this word?"
This small, beautiful book is a treasure, sure to be useful for individuals looking to heal themselves as well as healers looking to help their clients.

An outstanding guide to devloping wholeness in ones life

Caren Goldman has provided a tool for all to use to help us become whole. We all need to think of ways to awaken our inner spirit and this book provides us with words and thoughts which provoke healing and wholeness. The oportunity to take a few minutes daily and think about life's fuller meaning can only help with the healing we all need and desire. Caren's book can be used by those suffering from emotional, physical and psycological illness to reach for a fuller understanding of their place in the world. As a Perinatologist who works with women and their families who must experience unexpected and unfortunate outcomes in their pregnancies, it is often valuable to have a tool like caren's book which these families can use to help them make some sense of their difficult situation. I have encouraged many of my patients to utilize books and other resources to deal with their internal suffering and begin or continue on the road to personal wholeness. This book is just what is needed to help those who are suffering to reach into themselves and discover a source to wholeness.

After giving this book to individuals and families in need of healing, I continue to learn of others who are moved by the explorative value. The work moves people beyond simple perceptions of self to explore and open the pathways to healing on every level. I've noticed that the text, initially given to the terminally ill, is being read by every member of the person's family! The text has moved me from a dicotomous "self" to a deeper understanding and I look forward to this journey! I know a great work when I ponder on the content after reading it, and throughout the day, I find myself thinking of one -- or several -- of the words.

Funk as a way of life.

Excellent book. Yes it is dense as it's written from an academic perspective, but I used this book as a key source for a paper I wrote last year. Danielsen fleshes out ideas and perspectives on funk as a catalyst for social change, musical innovation and self-expression, all of which is pertinent to the cultural styles of music and dress we see today. Highly recommended.

Very informative but difficult reading. I don't know if Funk music can be understood or "felt" when looked at from an academic or scientific point of view. My suggestion is buy the music, listen, then dance "your butt off"!!

I feel this book opened my eyes to lots of possibilities and opportunities for growth, as well as looking inside at what might hinder growth. The author offered concrete ideas, stories of what he did and how it worked (or not) and shared valuable information about my attitude toward growth, reasons (right and wrong) for growth, and wrote in a very real and readable manner.

The book I wish I had written

I highly recommend this volume to clergy and judicatory staff (bishops, or whatever the equivalent is called in your tradition) who are concerned with the many declining mainline congregations. While much of the content is written from an Episcopal perspective, and Fr Keucher says much about the structure and common practice in the Episcopal Church, I also feel that his general recommendations for clergy involved, as I am, in the hard work of "stopping the bleeding" in local congregations is spot on. As a psychologist as well as a priest, there is more I think could be said to bolster his recommendations based on social and organizational science research. For example, he only mentions Edwin Friedman, and my own dissertation research explored the limitations of family systems theory applied to congregational dynamics. However, overall I found very much to like - and identify with - in this book. I think it could be a very useful tool for a support group for clergy engaged in this very demanding, unique and rare form of parish ministry.

About the Author
Richard H. Vollmerhausen currently consults in the areas of electro-optical systems analysis and modeling. He retired as head of the Model Development Branch at the U.S. Army s Night Vision Lab (NVL). During his tenure at NVL, the branch developed and validated a target acquisition metric to replace the traditional Johnson criteria. His experience includes project engineer and EO systems analyst for numerous Army weapon systems. His previous work include-ed designing air-to-air missile seekers for the Navy and working as an instrumentation engineer for Douglas Aircraft on the Saturn/Apollo program. Mr. Vollmerhausen is the author of two books on electro-optical systems analysis and has published numerous journal and symposium papers.

Donald A. Reago, Jr. has 24 years experience in electro-optics gained through his work at the Army Night Vision Lab (now NVESD). His background includes development on infrared systems, component development technology, and signal processing/multisensor fusion for automatic target recognition. He currently serves as the Deputy Director for Technology and Countermine at NVESD.

Ronald G. Driggers. received a doctorate in electrical engineering from the University of Memphis in 1990. Dr. Driggers has 23 years of electro-optics experience and has worked or consulted for Lockheed Martin (Orlando), SAIC, EOIR Measurements, Amtec Corp-oration, Joint Precision Strike Demonstration Project Office, Redstone Technical Test Center, and Army Research Laboratory. He was recently appointed to the Senior Executive Service as the Superintendent of the Optical Sciences Division at the Naval Research Laboratory. Previously, he was the Director of the Modeling and Simulation Division at the U.S. Army s Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate (NVESD). Dr. Driggers is the author of four books on infrared and electro-optics systems and has published over 100 research papers. He was Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopedia of Optical Engineering (Taylor and Francis). He was selected as the 2002 Army Materiel Command s Engineer of the Year, the 2001 CERDEC Technical Employee of the Year, and the 2001 NVESD Technical Employee of the Year. He is a U.S. Naval Reserve Officer and was selected as the 2001 Naval Engineering Duty Officer of the Year (William Kastner Award). He is also a Fellow of SPIE, the Optical Society of America, and the Military Sensing Symposium. In January 2010, Dr. Driggers took over duties as Editor-in-Chief of SPIE s flagship journal, Optical Engineering.
