Gateway to Prayer in Traditions of Saints and Anglicans

I love little pocket-sized prayer books like this one. I've collected dozens of them over the decades and enjoy the challenge and clarity that comes with a focused theme for a season of prayer. Another new prayer book, published by a sister imprint of Morehouse Publishing, is "Henri Nouwen: A Book of Hours"

I wrote the headline "Saints and Anglicans" with a bit of affectionate humor because, of course, there are countless Anglicans who are already saints. The two groups certainly are not mutually exclusive. But, quite seriously, I appreciate Bishop Frank Griswold's pragmatic choice of creating this prayer sampler drawn from various Anglican prayer books, plus the works of saints and all knit together with his own insights about regular cycles of prayer. The practical design of the book includes a ribbon--such a handy device for those of us who enjoy these little pocket-sized tools for daily reflection.

There are many themes in this book and I'm sure that other pilgrims will be drawn to other sections more than I was. There's one on "Patterns of Prayer," another on "Encounters with Christ," and segments focused on Scripture, mysteries of God and saints themselves. That's what's so nice about a sampler like this--there are sections where each of us will "settle in" and find prayer blossoming.

For myself, my favorite section is a daily cycle of prayers for all kinds of people who make up our core communities--from farmers and financiers to media professionals. As a longtime journalist myself, I know that we truly need all the prayer we can get.

A final serious note: Lots of spiritual pilgrims learn about resources like the Anglican books of prayer and pick them up as guides--only to find the thicker books too complex or even simply too long for newcomers. Here's an enticing way to taste various spiritual insights over a period of weeks or months.

It's nicely designed, spiritually sturdy--and quite inviting.

A delightful first prayer book for Episcopalians

I recently acquired this prayer book by retired presiding Bishop Frank Griswald. I was pleasantly surprised to find it in a small convenient size, hard back with a ribbon marker.

It is scripturally oriented and catholic in focus, and gives a good explanation of catholic devotional practices for those who are unfamiliar with them and want to start.

My only criticism is that there is not more material, but it is a wonderful first prayer book for someone reclaiming their catholic roots in devotional prayer!

This little book is a great combination of traditional and new. I particularly like the paraphrase of the Lord's Prayer. I use it for daily prayer every day since I got it. And the size fits nicely into pocket or purse.

How is God's own love being refected within the world and humanity as "eros?" Countryman attempts to reclaim "eros" as a valid and meaningful part of God's creation in the Church that has for so long engaged to hide "eros" by insisting on submerging it into "agape." Whether one agrees with Countryman's ultimate premise that eros will be transformative for the Church and for Christian expression in the world, this book presents wonderful and thoughtful insights into love.

What Bill Dols and Caren Goldman have done with the stories of Jesus' ministry are nothing short of liberating. What Jesus said, what he envisioned as the Kingdom of God, how those around him experienced him--all these are released from the dogma that often imprisons them. The lens through which we have seen Jesus becomes kaleidoscopic as the texts come to new life in the thoughtful reflections of the writers. As readers we are invited to bring our own lives into dialogue with these stories, and if we are courageous enough to do so, we sense the deepest wisdom and truths entrusted to these scriptures.

This beautifully conceived book appropriately combining Gospel passages, personal experiences and insightful readings, casts new light on reasons to travel with Jesus as our companion. Stirred by his total commitment in helping others as he carries out his mission, we can become encouraged to devote our full spirit towards a positive outcome when wrestling with a problem. Often it is through the throes of struggle that we discover self and can venture toward new truth, new possibilities.

Finding Jesus, Discovering Self is a lovely, thought-full, beautifully written, splendidly spiritual book created by two authors (Goldman and Dols) who bring a well-rounded, universal perspective to Jesus the Rabbi/Teacher....Jewish/Christian, female/male, journalist/clergy. They use the wisdom of literature and their own personal life stories to illustrate and guide us into an encounter with the Gospel (Synoptic and Gnostic) revelations of Jesus, so that we may meet and understand them in a completely new and internal way.

Schweitzer said: "...they shall learn in their own experience Who He is."

The Surprising Landlady and Her Borders

Mrs. Beggs is a delightful landlady with a house of older, sedate borders. Her newest border turns out to be a wizard who wrecks havoc on the quiet house. Turns out sweet Mrs. Beggs is a witch who must use her witchcraft to scoot away the wizard. All is boring and quiet once again...until the knock at the door. A new border is on the doorstep....with a long tail sticking out of his cloak. This was a delightful story with wonderful illustrations. The surprising twist in the story was how we can miss conflict in our lives when it it disappears and the power of women. When I came to the last page with the drawing of the new border it actually gave me the shivers!

It has an enticing and yet simplistic plot with illustrations within which you find more hidden details every time you look at them. About the Author
Colette Bachand-Wood, whose father died of complications related to dementia, is a graduate of Episcopal Divinity School and spent seven years of research and work with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related disease patients. She currently serves as rector of All Saints Episcopal Church in Whitman, Massachusetts, and is also chaplain at the Village at Propietor’s Green in Marshfield, a senior living facility with a memory care unit. Bachand-Wood also runs a monthly caregiver support group and previously worked as a hospice chaplain, where she received special training in Alzheimer care. She lives in Scituate with her husband, two daughters, and mother.

Barbara Cawthorne Crafton is a popular preacher, retreat leader, and writer. Her articles have appeared in the New York Times, Reader’s Digest, Episcopal Life, and other publications. She is the author of many books, including The Courage to Grow Old, Let Every Heart Prepare, Some Things You Just Have to Live With, The Sewing Room, Living Lent, and Mary and Her Miracle. She lives in Metuchen, New Jersey.

Very good book with much need information for today's generations!

What we need today is more opportunity for the generations to come together and pass on the spiritual gifts and legacy's to each other. We are too segregated by age groups as a culture and also in our churches today. I believe this is part of the reason why we are seeing all the mental illness and violence in our society in America today. Pat does a great job explaining how the generations really do need each other and how we can go about building up these interegenerational relationships once again! A must read for anyone serious about pursueing interegenerational relationships!
