Using ideas from practice theory and phenomenology, Berger shows that musical perception is a kind of practice, both creatively achieved by the listener and profoundly informed by social context.

Berger, revising his doctoral dissertation, tries to place the early 1990s death metal, hard rock, and jazz of Cleveland and Akron, within a social context. He introduces his study with an academic discussion of an ethnomusicology based on the theory of philosophers like Edmund Husserl. He then details the hard rock and African American jazz scenes in Cleveland and Akron's Caucasian jazz and heavy metal cultures, explaining the fashions and even the layout of the clubs. Berger next offers a comparison of the onstage experiences of the musicians. He moves on to a careful analysis of a hard rock and a death metal song, trying to link the songwriters' experience to their sound and lyrics. In the last part of the book, Berger places death metal in the numbing, dead-end social context of Akron. Though basing his research on interviews with local musicians, Berger seldom captures the passion of the various music scenes he considers. This book has been a family childhood favorite for me and my siblings. We are between the ages of 27 and 34 now and still rave about Socks For Supper. We would talk about how we used to reinact the story while reading the book. If it was the wrong kind of cheese in the fridge, then so be it. It always gave us a feeling of satisfaction, acceptance, and that the characters in the book could be any one of us. It's hard to find books that keep you close at heart, with yourself and with the world. Musician, painter, sculptor and preacher Otis (author of Listen to the Lambs and creator/performer of "Willie and the Hand Jive") is an angry and eloquent man who writes from the unique viewpoint of a white man who has been immersed in African American culture and music since childhood. His assertion that racism in American society may be worse than ever glistens with conviction and rage. Otis uses as his backdrop the development of jazz, blues and rock--particularly on the West Coast--in the 20th century, giving a fresh perspective on the contributions of black musicians and composers, while lamenting the appropriation of what were essentially black art forms by white society. Otis's recounting of his daily association with musicians both famous and unknown provides disturbing insights into the struggles of black performers in the U.S., and, by extension, African American society as a whole. Music legend Otis's lifelong activism spans music, religion, politics, and business. This latest endeavor, a mix of music, culture, and race politics, is a bold and risky attempt to rattle white America's conscience. Otis assigns his intended readership of salvageable (socially conscious) whites the monumental task of going "upside" the head of the "lip-servicing" Euro-American whites, whom Otis most vehemently resents. The book basks in a bygone era, when black music as an American art form grew out of poverty yet sustained dignity. Remembrances, interviews, and abundant photos form the basis of a Who's Who of rhythm and blues and early jazz. Fans of the pioneering days of early rock 'n' roll may remember Johnny Otis for his hit "Willie and the Hand Jive." His legacy is far larger than that, however, and this memoir provides a forum for him to expound on issues that are not directly connected to making records. During his adventurous career, he has drummed with jazz legends, including Lester Young, led a long-running rhythm-and-blues revue, and become pastor of Landmark Community Church (Reverend Hand Jive, he self-deprecatingly calls himself). A native Californian, Otis fervently recalls the plethora of often-overlooked black talent that hails from that state and specifically from Central Avenue in Los Angeles. Unlike many white musicians who played music steeped in black culture, Otis (who's Greek) has been accepted by the African American community. Because he has, he can make authoritative observations on current racial tensions, even if they're the same old things, for example, strong condemnation of L.A. police and an optimistic view of the Clinton administration. His writing style may strike many as lacking subtlety, but then his book is as passionate as his music. Aaron Cohen

A unique R&B Literary Perspective

This book deserves wider recognition. Upside Your Head !, written by Johnny Otis, was first published in 1993 but time has not diminished the merit of the subject matter. The author is a living R&B legend. His musical milestones are simply to numerous to list in this review. Throughout the book,the author provides riveting and vivid accounts of the African American musical contributions within the Rhythm and Blues genre. His detailed and lively profiles of the artists, tours, clubs and music business throughout the twentieth century are entertaining and insightful. Aside from his musical career,the author is a civil rights activist, pastor, painter, sculptor and successful business man and farmer.
All these elements play an integral part in his compelling story of the historical evolution of the Central Ave/L.A. African American cultural scene. His observations and personal experience on the impact of racism throughtout the second half of the twentieth century is especially thought provoking. His writing is particularly effective when it addresses the abuse and injustices experienced by the author, his family and fellow performers.
The pictures generously displayed throughout the book reflect a joy of being part of a musical movement that continues to resonate throughout the twenty-first century. The book provides the curious with an opportunity to explore the origins and artistic creative level of West Coast Rhythm and Blues. Upside Your Head!,is a richly rewarding reading experience.

This book by Johnny Otis, the legendary R&B artist, producer, composer, band leader, and mentor of great R&B performers is a fun and fast enlightening read for anyone who enjoys music of the pre war - post war Blues and R&B era. With political hues and comments on the too slowly changing issue of racism in America as a background to the music, the book gives a rich history from Otis's point of view and quotes many other performers of the era telling the story of the period and growth of " Race Music " and Records, to R&B, and eventually to Rock and Roll - for better, or worse. Full of rich information and Otis's strongly articulated take on our culture and the subject era and music, it should be considered a " must read " for those interested in American 20th Century Music.

New to Delany? Start Somewhere Else

I's like to start off by saying that I enjoy much of Delany's work, books like Nova, Dhalgren and others are among some of my favorite science fiction.

After seeing the number of highly positive reviews on this page I was excited to begin "Stars in My Pocket". But upon finishing the book I was very disappointed on every level.

The pace of the book was very, very slow with lots of very well written but ultimately uninteresting text.

The idea that your perfect erotic object is somehow magically your perfect love is just not how love/eroticism typically works. We all know a friend who is irresistibly attracted to someone who drives them crazy.

The re-re-use of the nail biting, large knuckled, veiny handed young male of dubious hygiene finally got tiresome for me.

After reading the nearly incomprehensible afterword by Delany I fear that this book was an experiment designed to please English graduates not regular science fiction readers.

If you are interested in Delany start with his short stories and go from there. He is an amazingly talented writer who went off course with this book.

Ignore the jazzhermit, this book is a winner!

I was prompted to write this response due to "jazzhermit"'s completely ill-considered, ill-informed and, quite frankly, loony "review" of this fantastic book. Echo and Reverb is one of the best books on a relationship between sound technology and social history one would ever hope to find. In short, Doyle provides a complete history of the sonic treatment of sound in the recording studio, including the emergence of acoustic effects, notable examples from recording history and ultimately the psycho-acoustic ramifications of sound processing in the recording studio, by way of some of the best-known pre and early rock'n'roll records.

After having read this book, I was prompted to do further research, and thanks to Wikipedia, I am now aware that Peter Doyle is a critically acclaimed academic AND fiction writer, which would seem to make sense, as the style is fluid and accessible and not simply some overly verbose academic treatise. In fact the book was the recipient of an "Association of Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC) 2006 award for Best Research in Record Labels and General History", so I would take that as a more appropriate indicator of its erudition and quality.

Furthermore, as a music lover and historian, I am a self-confessed taskmaster when it comes to historical data and trajectory. This book never sets a foot wrong, providing an absolutely comprehensive discussion of recording techniques, and the studios in which these new sonic innovations (Sun, Chess et al) took place.

Why the previous reviewer would have such problems with the book is beyond me, as it is one of the finest elaborations on the emergence of effects/audio treatments and the records that drove these innovations that one could ever purchase.

Echo and reverb: Much more than just cool sounds

Echo and reverb - together with tremolo, arguably the coolest effects ever conceived in audio. Some of us wierdos could listen to them all day. But beyond groovy tonality, there is a much deeper historical and cultural import in these atmospheric sounds which dates back to the proverbial Age of Antiquity. Doyle identifies this history and social meaning in a rigorous and yet endearingly poetic manner that commences with masculine (reverb) and feminine (echoic) implications of each effect and follows a thorough trajectory until the onset of stereo in the late `50s. For any audiophiles grappling with the issues of accuracy vs musicality, you'll be pleased to know that these quasi-religious debates were happening as long ago as the 1920's (realist vs romanticist) with echo/reverb clearly being identified with the latter which in turn is clearly identified with the personal liberation of the outsider and the underclass.

Doyle is great writer - very articulate, poetic and a true fan of this stuff. I recommend this book to enthusiasts of the original blues and rockabilly era as well as audio nuts.

File this one next to yer copies of Colin Escott and Peter Guralnick. A fine read.
