Helpful explanatory notes, a comprehensive bibliography and a well-organized historical introduction all add value to this intriguing anthology, which contains 27 Spanish and Latin American SF stories, most of them brief, dating from 1862 to 2001. As the editors point out, Latino and Mediterranean countries are often perceived as consumers, if not victims, of the technology developed and sold by their northern neighbors. Hence, Latino writers tend to work with "soft" SF themes and a social science emphasis while incorporating Christian symbols and motifs, as in the powerful Cuban story "The Annunciation" (1983), or denouncing brutal totalitarian regimes, as in the shattering Brazilian "The Crystal Goblet" (1964). From Argentina, "Acronia" (1962), a frightening foreshadowing of an Orwellian online workplace, highlights the dangers of mechanization, while "The First Time" (1994), from Spain, postulates mental and moral decay as the end result of mindless consumerism. Flashes of wit and a gentler spirit (especially in the few stories by women) occasionally brighten this darkling plain of violence, perversions and utter hopelessness, but overall the political, social and economic turmoil that rocked Latin America in the 1970s and '80s seems still to pervade its science fiction, making for a gloomy, though instructive, reading experience.

Coverage begins in the nineteenth century and continues through the early years of the genre's definition to include many more recent than older stories. The introduction provides a historical overview of sf development in the Spanish-speaking world, and the notes accompanying the stories build useful contextual frameworks for appreciating the authors and their work. Many stories exploit familiar sf territory--the technologically advanced future, time travel and its repercussions, and so on--but obscurer corners are visited, too, as in an alternate Crucifixion occurring on a far-distant world just being explored by humans, and a recasting of the conquistadors as spacefarers. "Cosmos Latinos" edited by Andrea L. Bell and Yolanda Molina Gavilán is an unusual entry in the Early Classics of Science Fiction series. Instead of focusing on early stories, this anthology looks at science fiction from Latin America and Spain. There are a couple of short stories from the 1800s, and a few from 1952 and earlier, but 22 of the stories are from 1964 and later and 8 are from 1989 and later. While this series might not be the most appropriate place for this collection, it is a very interesting collection, and the author histories do offer some insight not only into the authors themselves, but the evolution of science fiction in Latin America and Spain.

There are 27 stories in all, and if you are anything like me, you probably are not familiar with any of these author's translated works. No authors are duplicated here, so you will be introduced to 27 authors. They come from a wide variety of countries including Mexico, Spain, Chile, Cuba, Brazil, El Salvador, Argentina, Venezuela, and Peru. You will also get a good variety of science fiction stories, including such themes as future societies, space travel, time travel, alien visitation, and cyberpunk.

The editors provide a nice introduction to Latin American science fiction, along with some good introductions to the authors. They also provide a large number of the translations for the stories included in this anthology. While this book might not fit the descriptive name of the series, there is little doubt that the content is well designed for the serious study of speculative fiction, so in that way this is certainly a worthy addition to the series.

An Important Glimpse at Hispanic Science Fiction

"Cosmos Latinos" is a long overdue, excellent survey of the history of science fiction writing in Spain and Latin America, including Brazil. The authors have done an admirable job compiling a chronological history by selecting some of the most important stories written during the period from 1862 to 2001. This is an invaluable look at science fiction as seen through the eyes of a culture other than English, infusing much recent Latin American history into the futuristic tales told by the writers represented here. There is a broad array of themes covered in this anthology, ranging from religion to mankind's use of technology, as seen through traditional technologically-oriented science fiction that is akin to the best work from the likes of Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke, to more recent explorations in psychology and sociology (e. g. the North American "New Wave" movement of the 1960's and 1970's as exemplified by the works of writers as diverse as Samuel Delany, Harlan Ellison, Ursula K. Le Guin and Joanna Russ) and of course, most recently, the cyperpunk movement led by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling, among others. There are also echoes of work by the likes of Stanislaw Lem and J. G. Ballard represented in this anthology. I look forward to reading a subsequent volume edited by both authors.

It's about time!

Just finished this fantastic book, and I mostly wondered why there has been so little work done in making such material available. This book really left me wanting more. These Latin American and Spanish writers of SF are able to treat many of the traditional SF themes in very original ways, without being derivative of American/European SF styles. The stories have a wonderful, unique flavor. I hope the authors continue to make such stories available in English, especially the more recent stuff. "Stuntmind" was one of my favorites.

Immensely Practical & Deeply Spiritual

A helpful primer for church communicators everywhere. Meredith Gould draws on her experience with Roman Catholic, Episcopal and Lutheran congregations, and it's clear that church communication headaches transcend our denominational differences.

It's immensely practical, but in a way that taps into the deep spiritual roots of our calling. The very first chapter explores how church communication is ministry. Creating bulletins and prepping announcements isn't some mundane administrative task, it's a holy calling. You're doing gospel work. That's a needed reminder (even 5 years after this book first came out) and an appreciated pat on the back.

Superb in parts

I've written some pretty cranky reviews lately; it's a pleasure to write a nice one. Parts of this old book are superb--gripping--make you reach the end of a chapter and sit staring at the wall musing on what you just read and saying very quietly, "wow..."

It isn't all like that, alas; if it were, this would be one of the great classics of the SF genre. The superb parts are the middle, when Russ gets her narrative rolling and tells a straight story. The goodness begins with a portrayal of a bright, rebellious teen in the 1950s as she explodes out of her conventional life. It continues as the grown Irene, now an agent for the shadowy Trans-temporal authority, explores the iniquitous depths of Ka'abah, a colony world that is attempting to recreate a society based on a fantasy of the Arabian Nights, and in the process recreating the worst possibly kind of subjugation of the female spirit. Irene finally cannot stomach what she is seeing and determines to rescue one bright 12-year-old girl before her soul is completely crushed. But Irene's partner objects, and things begin to go wrong. Is he patronizing her in a way that is more subtle but just as demeaning, as the Ka'abah men patronize their women?

The problems with the book are the bread on this jammy sandwich. The opening chapter is mannered, self-conscious, distanced in a style of narrative that was just so trendy in the seventies and which is now just plain labored and irritating. It takes grit to wade through this now; I actually wondered why the book was still on my shelves and almost gave up rereading it.

The other slice of bread is the ending. The author intrudes herself here, and not in a clever or cute or insightful way, but in a way that I read today as simply a cop-out. She got to a certain point in the story where her characters were at complete loggerheads with each other and with the world she had designed for them. There was no clear way forward; to get them to any kind of resolution would take tens of thousands more words; so she threw up a firework of style tricks and ducked out behind a puff of smoke.

Still, the middle is just so darn good it redeems the frame. Oh! There's a fair amount of sex here. A lot of sex for 1978, and still today well beyond a PG-13.

Too Deeply Stereotyped

Feminist science fiction should shake us up and make us think but if it must use stereotypes it should at the very least go beyond them to challenge those destructive ideas.

This book fails to do that and instead ends up creating an out of control, confused and confusing main character in Irene without really giving us enough time to feel connected to her. Her mentor Ernst turns into a stereotyped man as well which was deeply disappointing though why it took Irene so long to see this is confusing.

The narrative even feels stereotyped, jumping around, going from what appears to be clear description to backtracking and undermining... narrative that jumps around is common Russ but this went beyond that in this book. There are actions and dialogue that are poorly tagged adding to the confusion. While it could have been written from one viewpoint (Irene) and primarily the jumps to other viewpoints from time to time only added to the confusion.

Prior to this I loved every piece of fiction and non-fiction that Russ has created; not this one.

Great Classic Feminist SF

In the vein of the Alyx stories, Russ offers up another gutsy time and space travelling heroine. There's plenty of adventure and plenty of feminist content, as well as some interesting narrative structures. (As when Russ briefly breaks the narrative flow to comment on the story in her capacity as narrator.) Self referential writing can easily become self conscious and stilted. It's hard to pull off, but when it works, it works well. Russ pulls it off. This is vintage Russ--more accesible than The Female Man, and more explicitly feminist than the Alyx stories.

Solid, bilingual collection of Modern Brazilian Poetry

This book is simply the best source for 20th Century Brazilian poetry. As well-known American poets from Elizabeth Bishop to W.S. Merwin have publicized and translated Portuguese poetry, the Brazilian poets in this volume are becoming better known. Several of these poets have individual volumes of poetry available in English translation.

This book contains poetry of Manuel Bandeira, Oswald de Andrade, Jorge de Lima, Mario de Andrade, Cassiano Ricardo, Joaquim Cardozo, Cecilia Meireles, Murilo Mendes, Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Vinicius de Moraes, Mauro Mota, Joao Cabral de Melo Neto, Marcos Konder Reis, and Ferreira Gullar. Bandeira, Drummond de Andrade, Melo Neto, and Moraes are the best known of these poets. This sampling of poetry is heavily weighted to Melo Neto who is "difficult" - as noted in the introduction.

The translations are very good because the translators are all poets in their own right. Some of the translations are not very exact and the descriptions can be altered significantly, but in general, these translations would be difficult to surpass. The poems are en face - that is on the left page is the orginal Portuguese poem and on the right facing page is the translation. This is the only way to publish bi-lingual poetry and greatly aids the English speaking reader, even if he is fluent in Portuguese.

The quality of the poems is uneven. The more recent poets, like Melo Neto, are increasingly linked to American Poetry so you will find the poems less regional the more recent they get. Since I find most modern American Poets to be needlessly dense and obfuscatory ("difficult" if you will), it is no surprise that I like the earlier poems much better. They are clearer, less baroque in the sense that there is less decorative but useless wordiness, and speak more to the human condition. Melo Neto, who the editors call "dense" and "difficult" reminds me very much of Wallace Stevens. Like Stevens, you put in an awful lot of mental work to get a few thoughtful, interesting phrases from a poem that is much too long for the subject covered. (Can you tell I dislike Stevens?) But if you do like Stevens, generally considered one of the great 20th Century American Poets, you will like Melo Neto.

My favorites in this book are Moraes, Drummond de Andrade, and Mendes. Poetry is one of those art forms that is as much dependent on the knowledge and experience of the viewer as it is the content of the artwork. For example, when Mendes speaks nostalgically of "meu quarto modesto da Praia de Botafogo" (my modest room on Botafogo Beach), I am transported to the sights, sounds and smells of when I lived in a modest room on Botafogo beach.

I also note that the introduction of this book is essential in understanding who these poets are and the ambience from which they write.

At any rate, give this book a shot if you're looking for good poetry full of introspection. 4 stars.

A gem and a marvelous introduction to Brazilian Poetry

Not only does this book (edited by no less an authority on poetry and Brazil than Elizabeth Bishop) contain poems by such greats as Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Vinícius de Moraes, João Cabral de Melo Neto and Manuel Bandeira-- but it has on the facing page translations by such respected greats as James Merill, W.S. Merwin, Mark Strand and Bishop.
The selections are neither too much nor too little. If, like me, you are learning Portuguese, the originals can be studied easily. The quality of the English translations is exceptionally high, many of them great poems in their own right. I credit Bishop and her co-editor Emanuel Brasil, whose introduction is brief and effectively sets the scene.
In Brazil, poetry is widely respected and read. The poets in this anthology are part of the generation that has broken away from the more rigid forms and themes of Portuguese and continental poetry. Poets like Vinícius de Moraes deserve to be known for more than writing the lyrics to "Girl from Ipanema" (he needed the money). This is their due. This anthology has introduced me to several poets I now plan to explore in greater depth.
Brazil is famous for its gems. It is clear this literary gem comes from a very rich mine.

One of the first anthologies of its kind

Initially published in 1972, this anthology stands as one of the first to introduce English-speaking countries to Brazilian modern poetry. Fourteen poets in all are represented, a few more heavily than others (with Carlos Drummond de Andrade and Joao Cabral De Melo Neto receiving nearly half of the space of the book.) Aside from this imbalance, it introduces many poets who are still unfairly obscure in English-speaking countries, even among those with an extensive grasp of modern poetry. Like any great anthology, it has since prompted a few publishers to release book length works of individual poets, esp. Manuel Bandeira, Joao Cabral de Melo Neto & Carlos Drummond de Andrade. Unfortunately, the poets who caught my attention the most such as Murilo Mendes, Cecilia Meireles & Vinicius de Moraes have not received the same attention due to them. From lyrical incantations & meditations of love through pieces of anguish, they prove that they are just as competent to write on these subjects as the world's other great poets. The multiplicity of voices & styles so noticeable in this anthology, proves that Brazil's modern poetry deserves a lot more notice and consideration.In "The End of the World" Joao Cabral de Melo Neto writes, "Instead of the last judgment, what worries me/ is the final dream." This anthology will provide us with numerous dreams for a long time.
