A summary is presented of the information required to implement each of the data fusion algorithms discussed.

Weather forecasting, Earth resource surveys that use remote sensing, vehicular traffic management, target classification and tracking, military and homeland defense, and battlefield assessment are some of the applications that will benefit from the discussions of signature-generation phenomena, sensor fusion architectures, and data fusion algorithms provided in this text.

About the Author
Avery Brooke has taught prayer and meditation and been a spiritual director for over thirty years. A Holy Cross oblate, she is a former mentor in the Annand Program in Spiritual Growth at Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, where she taught an introductory course on healing and the laying on of hands. Her other works include Plain Prayers in a Complicated World and Finding God in the World.

EXCELLENT

This is an excellent introductory text that emphasizes the ministry of healing as one of the primary works of the church and the believer. It traces the history of healing as an artifact of baptism and provides a glimpse from the early chuch in which physical healing occurred to later developments in which spiritual healing was emphasized. The author, through her own experience, encourages others to claim this important ministry in their own lives, in healing prayers for others, and in binding the works of the unholy one in restoring people to health.

Avery Brooke brings wisdom, experience, and knowledge to the practice of Christian spiritual healing ministry. Her context is a group of lay ministers in her Episcopal parish. Because of that I have used her book as a primary text for my own training for healing prayer group leaders both in seminary and in my private practice training small group leaders for spiritual companionship.

A disappointment

This book is supposed to be written for engineers with bachelor's degrees. [..] I found mostly non-mathematical explanations, apparently targeting the non-engineering audience. It would have been better to use my money as the down payment on a truly technical textbook.

I found the book useful in its presentation of the basics. Good coverage of imaging systems, radiometry, detectors, and Gaussian laser beams. No extraneous derivations, but the relevant equations and relationships are clearly and simply given.

People of all ages from Buffalo, New York were asked, in essence, "What is music about for you?" The book offers 41 of their answers. While it is impossible to categorize the responses, a few generalizations can be drawn. "Classical" music is generally marginal to people's lives. Instead, people identify with different popular styles, depending on age, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. The Grateful Dead, New Age, Country and Western, and Rap music are all diverse, highly symbolic styles worn as badges by their devotees. This book makes an important, stimulating contribution to an exciting area of study: the sociobiology of music. Recommended for academic lib raries.

Fascinating, Worthwhile Study

For what it is, this study of music in the lives of a diverse collection of people is hard to beat. The authors allowed individuals to speak about what they loved and didn't, in their own voices and in real time, so to speak. This is far richer material than you would imagine; don't be misled by the sniffy commentary offered by the library reviewer above.

The trick is that you, the reader, are left free to wander among these interviews and then construct your own hypotheses, make your own connections, draw your own conclusions. You may find a fundamental unity in the variety of human experiences described here. Or you may be struck by the ways in which the influences of age, gender, race, or historical context (the study was done several years ago) manifest themselves here.

I often recommend this book to college students struggling to find a focus for their introductory fieldwork in ethnomusicology. Will this reading help them narrow their focus? Will it provide them with ready-made theoretical models? No and no. It does enable them to see the value in NOT putting on one's analytical blinders too early in the process. It does remind them NOT to ask leading questions, NOT to stifle their garrulous or digressive respondents, and NOT to hesitate in changing their approach if the situation suggests it. And those are good lessons for any student, of almost any subject, to absorb.

To follow Christ was a noble calling when he was looked at by most as a heretic. "Conversations with Scripture: The Acts of the Apostles" looks at the disciples of Christ and their importance to the creation of Christianity in the bigger picture. With much spirituality and thought, C. K. Robertson gives readers a thoughtful and historical look at the men responsible for the greater spread of Christianity. "Conversations with Scripture" is an excellent addition to Christian studies collections.

Opening up the Acts of the Apostles

C. K. Robertson's short commentary on the Acts of the Apostles is an excellent resource for those of us who are not biblical scholars but have a desire to increase our knowledge of sacred scripture and integrate it into our lives. Robertson provides great insight into the flow of the spread of Christianity in the early church from a small group of disciples in Jerusalem to "the ends of the earth," as Rome was seen at the time. The book consists of both text that moves the reader through the book and study questions that aid the reader in applying the guide to his/her own life. It is a great resource and I recommend it highly.

Norrece Jones, himself a descendent of South Carolina slaves, has written a powerful book based on intensive research in the archives of antebellum South Carolina. He has studied slave testimony, legal records, folklore, spirituals, autobiographies of whites and blacks, newspaper accounts, church records, and many other sources. He challenges views of slavery as an interdependent paternalistic system; he sees it instead as a harsh and unceasing conflict, with most slaves refusing to accept their masters’ dictates and most slave owners struggling to keep slaves servile and devoted.

Means of control were both subtle and brutal. For example, there were festive holidays and gifts of liquor but also sadistic punishment: recalcitrant slaves—men and women alike— were staked to the ground or trussed from rafters with “nigger cord” to be whipped; some were branded; others were hanged or torched. Many of the same masters who provided a sick room for slaves also maintained a private jail.

But of all the means of control, the most sinister and the most effective was the threat of sale and separation from family. Troublemakers were routinely sold. The weak, the sick, the malingering, the disobedient, the impudent, the “incorrigible” were disposed of on the block. Slaves often aided and abetted runaways, although some, in hope of favor, were informants—every antebellum conspiracy in South Carolina was betrayed. Yet self-respect and pride survived nonetheless. “You no holy,” slaves told one mistress, “We holy.”

Fired by the wrong of slavery and writing with the anger of a Herbert Aptheker or Vincent Harding, Jones seeks to reverse recent scholarship, based on Eugene Genovese's seminal Roll, Jordan, Roll ( LJ 9/1/74), which casts the plantation South as a "hegemonic" paternalistic world. To Jones's eye, violence underscored slavery, and the slaves in no way had any complicity in the masters' paternalism. Through such controls as the breakup of slave families, dividing slaves by function, intrusion into slave religion, and armed patrols, fearful masters kept their boot on the blacks. Jones's assertion that other scholars have ignored control mechanisms is unfounded, and his focus on South Carolina lacks the close reading of folk life and locality that made Charles Joyner's Down by the Riverside ( LJ 6/1/84) so important. Still, Jones's description of multiple mechanisms of control is a useful summary of the many ways masters tried to rule unruly slaves. For university libraries. An article by Jones and John C. Not Your Average Parenting Book

I was invited to read by the early development director of a prestigious private school in our city, and I was expecting that it would be a typical parenting book with typical advice: pay attention to what your kids say, don't let them run over you, make them understand the value of money and that actions have consequences. I consider myself a fine parent, and had always tried to do those things. But this book was completely different from what I expected.

The basis for this book is that children need the adults in thier lives to be adults, and that not enough of them are. They don't need big kids, grown-up friends, or advocates. They don't need parents and teachers who strive to be youthful and cool, or to live their lives through those of their children. They need people who are different from them who can show them how to be successful adults. They need people who will listen to them, and respond with measured reason and maturity. They need people who will slow them down when they are moving too fast, and who will show them how to solve problems on their own, instead of solving their problems for them.

A lot of is counterintuative. But Heischman speaks from a position of authority, having spent his life in education. Although he is an Episcopal priest, this is not a religious book by any stretch. If any criticism can be bestowed, it is that the book reads like an academic paper rather than an easily-flowing narrative. And it harps on its central point a bit heavily.

Still, this short book packs a lot into 150 pages. After reading it, I was able to list ten changes that I need to make in my own parenting style in order to give my kids the tools to become successful adults, and not merely to remain the happiest possible children. There is a big difference between the two, and Heischman shows how to achieve the first without harming the second.

A thoughtful work on the meaning of good influence and the import of it...

This is a wonderful work that comes from experience. It is a thoughtful examination of the proper role of an adult from the perspective of what it means to influence another, a child, in a positive manner. In many ways, the ideas are simple; however, the author shares many experiences that illustrate how we have pressed children to "be older" while adults cling to their youth. This is an excellent work that shows what the difference is between childlike and childish and implores, quite practically, the adults in our society to embrase their experience and wisdom and provide that influence that children need to grow and learn to be productive members of society. Although it is not a lengthy work, it has density of wisdom between the front and back cover, and will give an adult reader much to think about - and discuss with other adults.

This is an excellent book to use for a discussion oriented book club and has direct relevence to education.

A heartfelt introduction and invitation to 2 Isaiah

This is no stuffy academic work, rather an invitation into deeper relationship with God via the book of the Prophet Isaiah. Dr. Cook combines his love of biblical study with the profound desire to experience, love, and worship with awe the God who speaks through prophets such as Isaiah. Whether you seek an introduction to the second half of the Book of Isaiah, or insight into how God calls us into relationship, you cannot go wrong with this book. Dr. Cook's insight and joy shine through in this accessible commentary. Rediscover reverence and servanthood in a new light, through the lens of biblical exegesis and theology. This is a must read for anyone seeking a deeper relationship with God and God's presence in Holy Scripture.

Accessible, authoritative, and a joy to read

Dr. Cook opens Isaiah to his readers in a way that is not only grounded in excellent scholarship, but also spiritually rich. Dr. Cook's style is not stuffy in the way some academic writings can be, not at all! While being informative about the context, content, and Christian interpretations of Isaiah, this book opens the poetry of Isaiah in a genuinely reverent, even loving way. Isaiah is thus woven into the very fabric of Christianity, enlivening our understanding of both the Bible and of Jesus as well. This book is a joy to read. I've savored every page. Recommended for anyone, from academics to the casually interested reader.

A new perspective for me

I am reading this book in connection with a weekly bible study. I helped select the book for the group which is mainly Episcopalian. I had never read 2 Isaiah with any depth and I am quite intrigued with Prof. Cook's perspective. Learning about how 2 Isaiah was written by writers who regard God with primarily awe and reverence has challenged me. We don't seem to have much in the way of awe and reverence in our culture today.
