If you love dance BUY THIS BOOK!

This is an amazing book. It's an ethnography (a study of a specific culture, be it a subculture or counterculture) that talks about Nihon Buyo, traditional Japanese dance. It comes with a DVD that gives examples from within the book and is so wonderful. You can learn some of the dances that they show if you want to as well because it's that easy to follow. MUST HAVE this book if you love dance.

This is the definitive James Dickey collection. Wallace Stegner wrote that Dickey's poems leave the reader with "an awed sense of the pure power of these words." Better known as the novelist who wrote Deliverance, Dickey was one of the most important poets of the century. "The Lifeguard" is one of his best poems and is typical of his writing in its blending of the physical and spiritual worlds, in its memorable images, and in its marriage of sound to sense. This is one to read again and again, to be newly astonished.

This weighty volume offers an impressive testimonial to one of our most complex and prolific poets. Where others condense, Dickey enlarges. His long, limber stanzas have a rhetorical eloquence that seems characteristically Southern, and his sensibility reflects the influence of a rural culture whose relationship to nature is unsentimental and immediate. Some of the most haunting poems discuss flying and falling, as in the verse describing a stewardess swept through the emergency door of an airplane. Dickey subordinates the horror of the incident to a transcendent detachment as the flight attendant's clothes "come down all over Kansas into bushes on the dewy sixth green/ of a golf course one shoe her girdle coming down fantastically/ on a clothesline, where it belongs her blouse on a lightning rod." The publisher could have aided the reader by providing original publication dates as well as a title index, but this is a major collection by an important, prize-winning author. Strongly recommended for all collections.

the whole motion -- james dicky

i have been a fan of james dickey's work since college. now that i am teaching a college class in world poetry, i just couldn't resist choosing dickey. the problem was, which book to teach. i decided to use the whole motion because it spans dickey's career, including every important poem of this great, underated american poet. poetry lovers will recognize some of his more anthologized works (the lifeguard, the firebombing, cherrylog road) and will be thrilled to find other penetrating works of art regarding nature, war, guilt, love, family, and so on. i personally recommend the poem drinking from a helmet, one of the greatest american poems i've ever read. if you love dickey's novel deliverance (one of the greatest american novels ever written) as much as i do, then you will certainly love this body of poety, a must for people who are interested in poetry about the power of nature, as well as the intracacies of human nature.

This is THE definitive collection

I became familiar with James Dickey while pursuing my BFA in writing, and I keep finding myself coming back to his poetry. All of the "famous" ones are here, as well as a few lesser-known gems--such as "Pursuit From Under"--that cannot be lived without,especially if you love great poetry. Dickey was persecuted after "The Fire Bombing" because it showed the bombing of Japan in WWII as beautiful, but it is easy, when reading the poem, to forgive this and understand that Dickey was one of the great masters of poetry. I rank him among the best and most gifted. It's amazing that a man who was once an executive for big buisiness turned out some of the most important poetry ever written. Sensitive and enlightening, this is a collection I would recomment to anyone. Peace not war.

The Old Man and the Afternoon Cat

I fondly remember reading this book as a child. The illustrations are bright and simple as is the text. The grumpy song in the front was a favorite of mine to sing when I was having a bad day, as was the happy ending song on a good day. I was comforted in knowing two things: I wasn't the only person to have bad days, and things would get better just as they did for the old man. I look forward to reading this story to my children in the future.

Classic Childrens Book Good Condition

This is a classic book my parents use to read to me when I was a child which is why I bought it. It tells the story of a simple old gentleman and a friendly cat. Its a very cute story for any cat lover!

The book itself is no more than 10-15 pages long and provides good pictures for young childern to look at and simple reading for children who are first learning. I would highly recommend this book to any parents who are looking for a good childrens book.

My mom gave this book to my 4 year old son, and he absolutely loves it. He can sometimes be a grump himself, so he gets a kick out of the grumpy song, as well as the happy song. This book is awesome!

Helpful introductions to each major selection or body of hollow earth literature, from Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic and popular tales to those of more obscure and overlooked authors, help broaden the reader's understanding of the mindset of each tale's era. Also included are explanations of the geological theories of the day that produced many of these stories. A welcome contribution to science fiction literary criticism and reference shelves.

Overview of 3D technology in 2010 - status and trends

"3D Video Technologies: An Overview of Research Trends" is very well named. Written in 2010 and released early in 2011, this book summarizes the current status of 3D technology, including stereoscopic video, holograms, volumetric 3D video, no-glasses stereoscopic video and no-glasses multiview video. This is a much wider scope than just the 3DTV you see in movie theaters today, however most of those other technologies are not available to the average consumer. The book identfies the key research organizations and examines all components of the deployment chain: 3D cameras, 2D to 3D conversion, how to represent 3D in a file, encoding, trasnmission, transmission errors, and displays. Each of these topics is covered lightly -- this isn't the book to go to for details -- but there are also a lot of references that could be pursued. The author also summarizes research currently underway and likley future research trends. I found this book easy to understand and a relatively quick read, both of which are positive attributes when trying to understand a very large and complex body of research.

The author's bias is that 3D is wonderful and will take over our video watching media in the near future, and that the internet will replace over-the-air broadcast, satelite, cable and the like. The book barely touches on physiological problems resulting from watching 3DTV, and does not opine on whether or not consumers want 3D. I am more of a sceptic myself, and I would have appreciated a bit more explorations into the negative aspects of 3DTV.

This book provides an excellent introduction to 3D Video. It gave me a large picture, including ambiguities surrounding the current status that are not otherwise obvious. If you enjoy this book, you might also appreciate, 3D Television (3DTV) Technology, Systems, and Deployment: Rolling Out the Infrastructure for Next-Generation Entertainment, which takes a more detailed and technical approach but is more difficult to read.

It gives me hope

For those unfamiliar with the story of The White Rose, it is a testament to the power and courage of those who are willing to stand up for freedom and independence in a world gone mad. Once again I find this book paticularly compelling today, for obvious reasons. The pamphlets the White Rose students distributed (that they subsequently paid the ultimate price for) are reprinted in their entirety in the book. They are well written, beautiful in spirit, and as compelling today as they were then.

The story is told with honor and reverence by the sister of Hans Scholl and Sophie Scholl, siblings and two of the students in Germany who brainstormed the pamphlets and were executed swiftly and denounced publicly for their trouble. In spite of that, or because of it, their efforts caused a ripple of resistance in the German republic that caused its fair share of trouble for the Nazi regime.

Calling for a policy of passive resistance -- the ability for each one, individually, to sabotage any efforts of the fascist regime in power -- was a brilliant move on their part. No fundraising, no unending meetings, no need for mailing lists or computer databases. Sabotage rallies, sabotage in all areas of science and scolarship which further the continuation of the war, sabotage in all branches of the arts, and a refusal to give a penny to any government organized charity...such was the call of these noble individuals who had no great army, but who understood the power of the individual.

I only learned of the White Rose within the past couple of years myself. Everyone should learn and understand what they did and why. It gives me hope.

A chronicle of heroism

In this slim book, Inge Scholl chronicles the heroism of her brother and sister, Hans and Sophie Scholl, and their friends in Germany during World War II. The Scholls were students at the University of Munich who had slowly become aware of the horrors their government was perpetrating. They decided that they had to do something, anything to stop the Nazis, and so they printed leaflets denouncing the government and providing information about atrocities. They distributed these leaflets throughout the University and the city, and created a network to distribute them even farther. They identified themselves only as The White Rose. The Nazis eventually tracked down the Scholls and their collaborators and executed them.
Inge Scholl tells the story beautifully, in spare and simple prose. She wrote the book originally for German youth after the war, so it is not a scholarly book, but it is even more affecting because of that. After Scholl's narrative are the texts of the six leaflets themselves, as well as a series of fascinating documents -- the Nazi indictments and sentences of the White Rose group, contemporary newspaper accounts ("Just Punishment of Traitors to the Nation at War"), and some deeply affecting testimonials, including a powerful letter written by a fellow prisoner of Sophie Scholl. There are also a number of photographs of the primary members of the White Rose group.

An amazing story, not the best account

I bought this book wanting some background on the White Rose before going to see the German film on Sophie Scholl, and it was informative, if rather short - the actual story is less than 100 pages, as half the book represents documents. On the plus side, it is by the sister of Hans and Sophie Scholl, so though it isn't a great read, presumably it is an accurate account. However, I have since read some negative comments that the author used this book to place herself more centre stage, which put me off a bit as I like to think the books I read - at least those on historical events - are well-researched and unbiased.

For a more gripping account with a fast-paced narrative, I would recommend Dumbach and Newborn's Sophie Scholl and the White Rose, which I've just finished. It has some rave reviews, is a much more vivid account, and as well as all the photographs of the students also includes all the leaflets including the seventh, previously unpublished, leaflet of the White Rose group that was discovered in the Gestapo archives after the fall of the Berlin Wall. So if you want both a good read and some very interesting historical documents, this is by far the better book.
