Fantasy with a sense of reality

The longest of the Neveryon tales (the other collections are of a bunch of stories each, some novel length, most novella) as well as the second volume overall, this one really gives Delany the chance to stretch out and explore the culture of this world he's created in such detail. The story of a teenage girl Pryn with a goal in mind but basically winds up wandering around all over, encountering all sorts of people and places. However the book is much more than a simple travelogue, and Delany is too smart to reduce the story to simple Point A to Point B to Point C writing. The themes of slavery and sexuality (and when they intersect) are still explored, though not as prominently, but instead Delany chooses to focus more on the nature of power and myth, and how the perception of reality can create myth and perhaps even alter reality. Pyrn herself is a lot of fun, a strong female character, clever enough to follow her own agenda but not completely immune to the forces of other scheming around her. Some other characters make appearances, Gorgik gets basically a glorified guest star appearance but like all the stories, even when he's not in the story itself, his presence informs the actions of all the characters. Pryn's quest takes her all over and if the novel has any problems it seems to ramble at points and not go anywhere, as if Delany couldn't find the right balance between showcasing his culture or making an intellectual point, both of which are harder to sustain over the course of an entire novel. However these are minor issues and will only marginally affect anyone's enjoyment in the book (you also don't need a doctorate in whatever to understand the themes, while a decent amount of this probably went over my head, you can read and enjoy the story just the same) and the rich detail of the Neveryon culture is intact and expanded on brilliantly, from the decadence of the cities to the noble squalor of the huts and villages. His culture feels real but the book doesn't feel like a dissertation. Probably the best prawise I can give is that even with all the highbrow stuff, Delany didn't forget to actually write a story, and given the usual state of fantasy, that's high praise indeed.

Influenced by Western Modernism and increasingly daring in their challenges to state control of their art, these poets disguised political protest and social commentary in shadowy images and metaphors, earning them the name "Misty Poets." Rejecting the Social Realism prescribed by Maoist doctrine, they celebrated subjective experience and individuality, ushering in a new era of artistic expression that has been dampened but not extinguished by the Tiananmen Square massacre. This new anthology is the most comprehensive English sampling available of the work of the Misty Poets and their even younger proteges, many of whom now live in exile in the West, where they continue to reshape Chinese poetry and Literature. Editor Tony Barnstone offers a generous and representative sample of the work of more than a dozen poets. From more familiar writers such as Bei Dao and Duo Duo to such emerging figures as Zhang Zhen, Bei Ling, and Chou Ping (who composes many of his poems in English), these poets characterize the vibrant reawakening of Chinese poetry. In this sampling of 14 contemporary Chinese poets, Barnstone, who spent a year teaching at the Beijing Foreign Studies University in the mid-1980s, brings together the works of "Misty Poets" and their successors. The "Misty Poets" wrote from 1979 to 1989, when the political and literary climate in the People's Republic of China loosened up and allowed individualism, albeit often obscure in theme. The works of their successors, called the "Post-Misty Poets" here, sometimes express new levels of internationalism and sensuality. A few of these poets have suffered imprisonment, and alienation and death are frequent themes in their poetry. The book includes an essay by Barnstone on translation, short biographical sketches of each of the poets, and an introduction to the political history of China in the 1980s, interwoven with an explanation of the departure from Marxist literature found in the poetry of that period. The translation is flowing and the sample chosen large enough to be representative, recommending this volume for both lay readers and specialists.

"I was pleasantly surprised to find Barnstone's [introduction] 'Chinese Poetry through the Looking Glass' to be as interesting as it is long. Some of it was necessarily the standard treatment, but much of it was new, witty, and thought-provoking. It actually may be somewhat discursive for the general reader, but at least it is not the old soup of conventional remarks. His note on translation, 'Translation As Forgery, ' is even odder and entirely unexpected; it is a very lyrical, abstract statement on the nature of text, reality, and value in art. Again not your standard 'I want to stay close to the text, but also offer the reader poems in English' (the great oxymoron of Chinese translation theory). As perplexing as I sometimes found Barnstone's remarks, they were nevertheless a breath of fresh air."--World Literature Today

Many contemplative, prayerful acts involve repetition of action: walking a labyrinth, reciting the Divine Office or saying the rosary. So why not knitting? As their needles flash and click, veteran knitters Jorgensen and Izard practice "contemplative knitting," which they say is just as real and fruitful a spiritual practice as any longstanding tradition of the church. Jorgensen, a Roman Catholic laywoman and spiritual director whose grandmother taught her to knit as a child, rediscovered knitting a few years ago and began to knit as part of her ministry. Her first project was a shawl for a woman in her congregation who had lost her husband in a car accident: "While I knitted, I prayed to enter her grief; I prayed light into every stitch," says Jorgensen. She chose an "Adirondack" pattern to honor the love that this woman and her husband had shared for the outdoors. Izard, a United Church of Christ pastor, shares stories from the shawl-knitting circle she organized at her church. The shawls change the lives of the knitters themselves, inviting them to engage in quiet meditation, and they also make an impact on the people who receive them, many of whom are recovering from illness or bereavement. Fans of knitting will be, shall we say, hooked: the book offers practical steps on selecting yarn and knitting simple prayer shawls, but its most enduring feature is the heartwarming stories of shawls knitted and given as artifacts of prayer.

Wonderful Spirit-Filled Book - Recommended for Crocheters Too

Because the title of this book says "Knitting", I had wondered how helpful it would be for a crocheter interested in shawl ministry. Based on other Amazon reviews, I took a chance and am glad I did so. While the authors are clearly knitters and write from that perspective, I could easily relate to the stories they told and to the ideas they shared on shawl ministry. This is not a pattern book (although it includes a basic knitted shawl pattern and a basic crocheted shawl pattern), but rather it is more of a spiritual book filled with stories, prayers and quotes from various faith traditions, as well as suggestions on how to do shawl ministry. Just reading the book gave me such a spiritual lift and provided me with inspiration for my shawl ministry.

A peacefully satisfying and inspiring read, a brilliant concept.

A book which will draw you in to the depth of its vision, the reality of the Unseen and the practicality of a simple, delightful, peaceful occupation while thinking of and helping others. First read hurriedly on loan from a friend, I knew it was a book I needed in my collection. One I would return to for its peace and wisdom. Everything you need to be part of this knitting outreach to those who suffer is explained in detail along with how this can be a group endeavor to the benefit of those participating as well as to the receiver of a shawl. A peacefully satisfying and inspiring read, a brilliant concept.

Clearly illustrated, with supporting open-source software

Disclaimer: I've scanned this book but didn't read it thoroughly (yet). My impressions so far have been very positive. The book is clearly laid out and extensively illustrated. An added (and big) advantage is that it references a freely available Python library (pyradi) that was developed by the author and specifically supports the content in this book. All in all: a very valuable resource.

About the Author
JAMES DICKEY, born in Atlanta in 1923, is most widely known as the author of the novel and screenplay Deliverance. He is also the author of several other novels and fifteen books of poetry. His many honors include the National Book Award and a Melville Cane Award for Buckdancer's Choice (1965). He was invited to read at President Carter's inauguration in 1977, and most recently served as Judge of the prestigious Yale Younger Poets series. He died in 1997 in South Carolina.

One of my favorite books of poetry

This book has the best of Dickey's writings. I bought it 15 years ago for "The Performance" and "Drinking from a helmet". Of all poetry about war, this is the most realistic.

A welcome volume

The Book of Common Prayer is one of those books that helps shape my life and spirituality. I was once asked to list books that have most influenced my life, vocational discernment and spirituality - I had a list of important books I'd read, but I also inserted a subset of books that continue to be of importance on a regular basis; in this small collection of books, the Book of Common Prayer shared pride of place with the Bible as one that I most frequently read.

I have collected editions of the Book of Common Prayer (with origins in the 1500s, it continues to be updated in various guises in various parts of the word; the touchstone is still is the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, but my most frequently used edition now is the 1979 Book of Common Prayer edition by the American Episcopal church), and also collect books about the Book of Common Prayer. Vicki Black's text is part of a series done by Morehouse Press, a publisher of Episcopal titles, who have introduced a 'Welcome to...' series to help both newcomers and established members better understand different aspects of the church.

Black's book is short and accessible, and follows the 1979 BCP in structure. There are sections of this book that provide introduction and commentary for each of the major sections of the Book of Common Prayer: Baptism, Eucharist, Daily Office, Church Year, Making Vows (Confirmation, Marriage, Ordination), Pastoral Offices, and the 'extra bits'.

While the BCP is arranged in a different order from Black's chapters, the arrangement of chapters in Black's book follow the criteria of 'most-used' - there are parts of the book that are more frequently used than others. Each chapter in Black's book can be read independent of the others for the most part, which makes this a very useful tool for Lenten studies, church groups and others who might want to follow a different sequence.

Black's first chapter opens with a comparison of the Episcopal church in practice to a scene in 'Finding Nemo' - I knew I would love this book at that instant! The main fish characters, Marlin and Dory, are swept up in a current that draws them along, together with a host of others, and it is both the stream and the community that transforms them in their quest. This is analogous to the way the liturgy and the community of the church should draw people in and carry them forward - 'we discover that we are not alone, and this liturgical current of worship, prayer, and praise will indeed take us where we want to go - to union with the God we seek to love.'

After giving a brief, informative and honest history of the origins of the Book of Common Prayer (including some of the political issues that no longer inform the reason for the BCP), Black proceeds to examine the different parts of the book in seven additional chapters. Included in this is a bit of theological analysis, liturgical practice, biblical basis, historical underpinnings, and questions for reflection and discussion (this latter piece is far from comprehensive, as the questions are open-ended to permit further questions to develop). Each of these implicitly draws into an idea of scripture, tradition and reason as the pillars of the Anglican system.

This is a very informative and useful guide, both for those who are new to the Book of Common Prayer, and those who have held the book in their hands through many editions all their lives.

The Neveryon books are challenging and good

Samuel Delany's four-book fantasy series, "Tales of Nevèrÿon," is hugely under-read and under-appreciated. Delany primarily writes science fiction. He's won both of science fiction's highest American honors, the Hugo award and the Nebula award, the latter twice in the 1960s. But the Nevèrÿon books stand on their own as excellent fantasy. (Somewhat confusingly, "Tales of Nevèrÿon" seems to be a name for the four-book series but also the title of the first of the four books. I refer to the series as "the Nevèrÿon books.")

In general, Delany's fiction is somewhat experimental and academic, (which is in and of itself remarkable, even inspiring---as is Delany's own authorial and academic success---given that he is highly dyslexic). The Nevèrÿon books may not be prohibitively difficult for young adults; but, they certainly weren't written to be easily approachable by an audience *primarily* of young adults. They are certainly not pot-boiler or formulaic fantasy. In addition to the presence of dragons and barbarian warrior-heroes, which are relatively common fantasy tropes, there are features of the decidedly unromantic Nevèrÿon world and cultures that are highly original creations by Mr. Delany, and the tales themselves are in a naturalistic style at times so gritty you're surprised there isn't a fine layer of dust upon the page. Most of Delany's characters are earthy survivors who interact with their varying cultural, social, economic, and physical environments in a matter-of-fact way interrupted--in the case of some characters anyway--with contemplation, even a sort of philosophizing. There is poignancy throughout, and it's subtle and masterful. The reader can't help but wish the characters well, even if some of them wear the harshness of their lives like old leather garbs, or are simple in their desires and ambitions. The characters of the tales range widely: active and passive, young and old, healthy and ill, famous and obscure, male and female, free and slave.

Social philosophy within sword and sorcery makes for a laborious but effective thought experiment; moderately recommended

Sword and Sorcery is turned on its head and made into a setting to explore issues of race, sexuality, slavery, economics, and language within the nested narrative that is Nevèrÿon. This is ponderous despite itself--the philosophical, talky style frequently drowns out the readability of the short fiction format and sword and sorcery genre. But going in with those expectations--expectations which the framing narrative insists on--also make it a compelling and effective experiment. It's tongue-in-cheek in tone, demanding in content, and intentionally metatextual; Delaney's ruminations on social structures and social tools are as pedantic as they are creative, and they're intimately tied to the protagonist's stories. I find that I like this more than I enjoy it, because I admire what it does but the reading experience perpetually kept me at a distance. I would still recommend it to the interested reader.

Dynamics of Dictation and The Love of the Game

The House That Jack Built is a must have for any serious poet or reader of poetry and poetics. Spicer's lectures on dictation, the serial poem, and the practice of reading lay a foundation for the art of writing poetry that is without default. His ideas are instrumental in poetry's process. Peter Gizzi's afterword enlivens the spirit of Spicer's practice and makes it available to the reader. Exhibiting a close relationship with Spicer's work and method, Gizzi both completes and opens the material discussed in the lectures. A stellar accomplishment.

A must for anyone interested in 1 of the 3 greatest poets [writing in english] circa 1950 to present. Gizzi's essay is illuminating and steers clear of obfuscating what Spicer meant by "dictation" and the "outside".
