I purchased this book mostly for the chapters on cleaning optical components. Some methods you may have heard of but never learned (e.g. the drag method and chalk method) are described in great detail, by people that actually use the methods on crazy-expensive optics. I learned a lot and what I learned worked well in my practice. There are also chapters on cleaning materials, packing optics, inspecting optics, and so on. There's sage advice throughout the book, e.g. you don't have to clean it at the first sign of a blemish, and which components are especially sensitive to cleanliness.

If you clean expensive optical components, get this book. You'll be able to clean even internal optical components without fear.

I love the way the author acknowledges the reality of mealtime with kids (sometimes harried, not always gourmet) and celebrates that time as it is: a gift from God. This book encourages creative and fun prayer and family meal time.

Creativity and Humor Light Up Prayers for the Foods and Places Where We REALLY Eat!

As a father of two grown children, I had forgotten how a creative approach to meal-time prayers can spark both joy and new perspectives on our time together over everything from fast food - to a banquet. Then, last autumn, I made a pilgrimage to Iona off the coast of Scotland, where part of the spiritual discipline for the dozens of adult pilgrims is a playful approach to praying over mealtimes.

I wanted to buy one of the mealtime prayerbooks we used at Iona, however, many of the well-thumbed guides in the Iona dining room were out of print - or weren't available in the United States. So, I was pleased to discover this new book from Morehouse Publishing by Julie Sevig, called "Peanut Butter and Jelly Prayers." The moment I opened the cover, I found myself in the same thankful-yet-playful sacred spaces that I recalled from the Iona dining room.

In a mere 82 pages, Sevig serves up enough creative material to enliven your meals for a long time! Some of these prayers are quite serious. Some are beautiful. Some are extremely simple. Some are designed to add new spiritual rhythms to seasons of the year - like various Advent prayers in preparation for Christmas. But, for me, it was the fun prayers that caught my eye, including a special prayer devoted simply to "pancakes," whenever we choose to consume such wonderful comfort food.

There's a four-line vegetarian prayer in rhymed couplets that's perfect for families avoiding meat. And, for pizza lovers? There's a special prayer that ends with a reminder that God, too, "delivers." No, these prayers are not irreverent. The author is using creative surprises to spark a greater awareness of our world.

That brings me to her best prayer in the book, called "Fast Food." As a journalist covering religion for more than 20 years, this is the first time I can recall an author taking the time to pen a prayer for Americans' most frequent dining venue outside the home! Bravo, Julie Sevig, for thinking of this one.

Sevig is a longtime journalist herself. She's an expert in developing Sunday school materials for children - and, perhaps most importantly, she's a parent. In the book, she does provide questions for discussion with each prayer, but my guess is that most readers will wind up memorizing a favorite handful of her prayers. So, she will be shaping their lives long after the book itself has been tucked away on a family bookshelf. Finally, that's the best salute I can give this little volume - that it is likely to live on, quite intentionally, in readers' spiritual memories.

About the Author
Jonathan D. Ellis is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Rochester with a joint appointment in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Institute of Optics. He obtained his doctorate from the DelftUniversity of Technology in the Netherlands, and M.S. and B.S. degrees from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, all in mechanical engineering. He actively participates in SPIE, the Optical Society of America (OSA), and the American Society for Precision Engineering (ASPE). He currently serves as Director-at-Large and Treasurer for ASPE.

Professor Ellis research interests are in precision engineering, interferometry, optical metrology, instrumentation for primary standards level metrology, freeform optics fabrication and metrology, and precision scanning systems.

A wonderful book by a great composer and thinker. If Rick Bass were a classical composer, this is sort of book he'd produce.

One huge thing that Amazon doesn't mention: the book comes with John Luther Adams CD inside! So the price is really a great bargain.

Bridging the gap between a poetics that "foregrounds its formal construction"-i.e., sets language apart by fixing it in unintuitive, nonreferential ways -and a poetics that foregrounds a work's relationship to cultural contexts (such as factories, raves, magazines or listservs), Watten, a poet and English professor at Wayne State University, weaves an impressively wide array of perspectives into an argument for the continuing importance of avant-garde strategies in art today. Watten's Total Syntax (1985) helped outline the critico-theoretical underpinnings of the differing practices now known as language poetry. Following up, Watten offers eight extended, densely wrought meditations on making "new meaning," which can, in its inassimilability, form the basis of a politics. Taking in El Lissitzky's "Prouns," Zukofsky's poetry, Detroit-based techno and the art of David Wojnarowicz, chapters cover "Negative Examples: The Theory of Negativity in the Avant Garde"; "Post-Soviet Subjectivity in Arkadii Dragomoshchenko and Ilya Kabakov"; and "The Poetics of Space in Posturban Detroit." Reexamining the founding myths of language poetry itself, "The Secret History of the Equal Sign" questions the East Coast bias to the movement's reception and tracks some of its collaborative texts. "The Bride of the Assembly Line" relates Ford and Fordism to Gertrude Stein's textual production and to Watten's own practices as an editor of This magazine and press.. In another piece, "Nonnarrative Poetics" is compared with the fall of Saigon, where there was "neither a single overarching perspective nor a necessary conclusion." The sheer breadth of local reflections and digressions is impossible to summarize. and recalls Watten's magisterial long poem Bad History (1998). The cumulative effect of these eight pieces, along with a substantial introduction and individual chapter prefaces, is enlivening, opening the way to unusual syntheses of genres and perspectives, and deep engagement with the utopian intimations of radical art.

Nothing Has Been The Same

It's always a strange sensation for me to go into a record store, or even see what's available here, and find so many John Cage recordings in print. As the most essential and avant-garde composer of the century, that's gratifying to me [a composer] but also unnerving that anyone so experimental and uncompromising in the arts would enjoy such popularity.
This book goes a long way towards explaining that. And in many ways, this book stands apart from his music, and can be enjoyed without ever hearing or knowing of Cage's music pieces. Because the music was almost by accident - Schoenberg told Cage that he was an inventor, not a composer, and this book demonstrates that, and goes further to show Cage was a philosopher. Music just happened to be the medium where he best expressed his philosophy, but it could have been painting or film, depending on his path. The book defines a way of living and thinking and seeing, and of course hearing, the world. That's what it's about. And it's beautiful and gentle quality capture the essence of Cage, a true quiet revolutionary. His revolution was profound, and best expressed in his piano piece 4'33", where the pianist does not make a sound at the instrument. The revolution of that event was the most profound and destabilizing in the history of music, and yet it was entirely silent. Such is the power of Cage's ideas that he has no need to really 'lecture' about them, he merely presents them and let's their own strength do the rest.

don't buy the Kindle edition

The Kindle edition is just a collection of scanned pages. The text doesn't reflow, and doesn't zoom. It is microscopic on an ordinary Kindle. The book is marked as "optimized for large screens" but it is really just an extremely lazy attempt at an ebook. I expected reflowable text and a few large images of Cage's visual scores. What I got was unusable on my Kindle.

great book: DON'T BUY THE KINDLE VERSION!

This is one of my favorite books on music, for sure, but the Kindle edition is making me crazy!!! I read on the iPad and have to magnify each page to get the type readable: each page is an image, so no highlighting, annotating etc. is possible, but there's a GIANT margin around the page, which if it had been utilized, would make a totally readable font-size. CRAZY-MAKING!!! a pdf version would at least be possible to mark up using the various PDF readers out there.

what are publishers thinking?!?! PLEASE put some more effort into creating e-reader versions: or at least warn the buyer ahead of time that most e-reader functionality will be unavailable.

okay, rant over. enjoy the book, it's life-changingly wonderful!!!

Some authors combine scientific and philosophical issues, like Kurd Lasswitz in his witty tale To the Absolute Zero of Existence: A Story from 2371, while others, as in Erik Simon's 1983 title story, pose psychological puzzles involving alien phenomena. Though the earlier stories in particular demand painstaking reading, all of them repay it with rewarding insights into German and Austrian culture and the many possible uses and misuses of science. THE BLACK MIRROR & OTHER STORIES: AN ANTHOLOGY OF SCIENCE FICTION FROM GERMANY AND AUSTRIA TRANSLATED BY MIKE MITCHELL, EDITED BY FRANZ ROTTENSTEINER: In this fascinating new collection from Wesleyan University Press readers get to see a great anthology of original science fiction from Germany and Austria spanning over a century of work. Editor Franz Rottensteiner offers a lengthy introduction spanning the entire history of science fiction in Germany and Austria, going into detail on the important authors starting back in the eighteenth century and continuing up to the present. Rottensteiner also does a great job of discussing German and Austrian writers who were eventually published in American magazines and anthologies and became popular in the United States.

The anthology is divided into sections by era, the first five stories being published in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. In this early period, science fiction stories were a lot more ponderous and philosophical, critiquing the way of life and its meaning and worth. In the next era, set between the World Wars, Hans Dominik in "A Free Flight in 2222" has the world not developing space travel and making it to the moon until the early twenty-first century; but after this hurdle is reached, we travel on to each of the planets by the end of the century. It is an interesting outlook from 1934 on a space race that in reality began with the moon and essentially stopped there.

In the title story, "The Black Mirror" from 1983 by Erik Simon, the world has made first contact with an alien race, but because of the distance, ships from Earth and ships from their planet take years to arrive. And now the aliens are arriving with a new invention: a giant silver mirror of immense beauty on one side that cannot be broken or shattered. On the other side is a black mirror that is in fact nothingness. It is a black hole in which an unbelievable darkness can be seen, and whatever is thrown into it, disappears forever. At first humanity is delighted at this amazing invention, and then begins to consider every possible item that can be tossed into it, without regarding any consequences. "Bit by bit , they'll throw the whole universe," one alien says to the other, uncertain as whether humanity has doomed itself.

In stories from the more recent period, there are stories debating the merits of technology and the Internet and whether in the long run it will benefit or hinder humanity. What is perhaps most interesting in this collection is that science fiction stories from Germany and Austria are really no different from those written by American authors. Ultimately, humanity has always and always will hold a great fascination for the future and what it may entail, no matter what country or culture they are from. The Black Mirror is a great science fiction collection that opens a great window into a world of foreign literature that many English speakers have never known, which will hopefully lead them on to reading more of these works from other countries.

Worthwhile and Very Satisfying
By The One You Need To Listen To
Rottensteiner has intelligently broken up the stories into the times they were written; this served me especially well because I had recently taken a course in German History, which gave me an even greater appreciation of what their aspirations or current situations were. The stories begin as early as 1871 and end in the present day. Regardless of whether you have any foreknowledge going into the book, there are many stories to be enjoyed:

The Absolute Zero of Existence - this is a great example of a utopia, at this point in history an overwhelming majority of the world thought that peace was possible, and it is fun to imagine alongside the author. In this story we read of a group of young people, all virtuosos in different sciences and our main character is an artist who plays an Odorchord (a piano that plays smells instead of music). What happens next shows us the folly of youth and the hazards of an overly scientific world.

The Missing Clock Hands - disorienting at first but ensnaring, this is a very fun read that I wish could have been infinitely longer. The protagonist finds himself in court but only after the most mysterious of circumstances.

Is Earth Inhabited - This author would have loved discussions about Carbon bias regarding life on other planets. It's a fun summation against the possibility of life on this planet, from the view of another race.

Thought Control - A sadly brief, but very good story born during the time of the Stasi and overbearing Russian influence.

A Letter From the Other Side - A short story that bears a chilling semblance of texting and our addiction to computers. This one is without a doubt, my most favorite of the entire selection, hopefully you will see why.

Project 38 - A remarkable journey of a hacker who reaches high above simple sabotage and details his life to the last person you would suspect to listen to him.

Mother's Flowers - if you do not feel wounded after reading this, you have no heart. A subtle SciFi story, this one hurts the way Flowers for Algernon did..

I reached the end of the book very sad that my journey through German/Austrian SciFi had ended. However, thanks to Rottensteiner's many suggestions of other titles by the authors included in this book, I think I am about to embark on an even longer adventure!
