Fantastic overview of the poetic movements in the modern era

A fantastic collection of essays written by famous poets from 1800-1950. The progression of various movements of poetry such as surrealism and the interplay between poetic forms and these movements is fascinating. Imagine reading a treatise on painting by a famous painter! This book is the same, except poets! Poets included are: Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats, Shelley, Emerson, Whitman, Dickinson, Hopkins, Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Mallarmé, Breton, Lorca, Valéry, Césaire, Pound, Eliot, Loy, Hughes, Zukofsky, Stein, Stevens, Marianne Moore, William Carlos Williams, and Charles Olson.

Seems like a great selection of essays

Seems like a great selection of essays, but: the translations from the French are appalling. I read Mallarmé's "Crise de vers" alongside the translation here and was shocked. The translation is rarely literal, preserves few of important distinctions (e.g. "élocution" is translated as verse, even though "vers," which is also translated as verse is the central concept of the piece) and has an aggravating tendency to explain what Mallarmé means, instead of reflecting what he wrote. This is a big problem when a text is as ambiguous and open-ended as this one: the translator often just picks an interpretation (in my opinion, generally an implausible one with little textual support), nails it down and deletes whatever might call it into question. Just awful. I couldn't find who did the translation (the editor?), though I can understand not wanting to attach one's name to it.
