Who are the 'experts' who police worship?

In his forward, Rowan Williams points out that our views on supposedly second-order issues reveal our stance of first-order issues. How true that is in the heated debates about homosexuality in the Anglican Communion. However, this book is about our success or failure at Liturgy. For most of my lifetime, we have been experimenting with little service booklets. By the time we have become used to them, another liturgical revision is dumped on us. It is as if the Church thinks it can help us worship more meaningfully if it creates a new set of texts. This fails to take into account that many other features affect the way we worship, such as tatty vestments, badly designed furnishings, rushed recitations with little or no silence or pacing.
Whatever liturgists say, symbols speak directly to us and may not say what they `ought' to say and if we have to have them explained to us in an `instructed Eucharist', then these symbols have failed to communicate.
There is an element of sour grapes towards the end. The essayists have frequently met in highly congenial settings but are largely self-appointed and felt threatened when the Anglican Consultative Council planned to set up what they considered to be a rival body. Maybe they should have been more bold and invited `ordinary' churchgoers to join such a body, with the liturgists invited along
