A Useful Reference

This book, while it contains many "pretty" texts, would be most useful and interesting to someone who has studied or has an interest in church history or theology.
This is a large and sweeping collection, and attempts to represent everyone from Clement of Rome to the Cappadocians to sixth-century Chinese Nestorians to Julian of Norwich to Ulrich Zwingli to Teresa of Avila to the Puritans to Isaac Watts to Susanna Wesley to Jonathan Edwards to Samuel Taylor Coleridge to John Newton to Soren Kierkegaard to the Bronte sisters to Robert Louis Stevenson to Dwight Moody to Harry Emerson Fosdick to e.e. cummings to James Weldon Johnson to the Taize Community to Janet Morley to Thomas Merton to Billy Graham. Each entry contains a brief but generally helpful paragraph to "set the scene." I only wish his footnotes, which deal mostly with intellectual property rights, gave more information on his primary sources, although that would probably turn it into an unmanageable tome.
I'd mark this one a "must have."

As is air to a balloon and as energy to the human body, so prayer is to human dreams and hopes. Though filled with prayers, Michael Counsell's collection is a small fraction of the rich treasure trove of Christian prayers for two millennia. That accounts for some favorites missing, such as, Chief Seattle (1790-1866) and failure to mention John Newton's "Amazing Grace" (346). The historical sourcing is priceless from Gloria Patri and Doxology (Thomas Ken, 294) to Reinhold Niebuhr's Serenity Prayer (1934, 451) and more. God's footsteps show through their prayer life.
No tiresome compendium, it opens a brilliant cascade of light touching upon and helping every condition of the human heart, joyful to grief-stricken.
In spite of few errors, birth-death dates of Menno Simons (1496-1561, 183) and George Whitefield (1714-1770, 319) and Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887, 421), and a few misspellings (410, 464, 546), Counsell's book will enrich every reader's spiritual life. And perhaps he will grace us with a companion volume. It is not too much to say that every pastor and seeker should read it.

exspansive, comprehensive and inspirational.

This comprehensive compendium of prayers can teach by example from spiritual giants of Christian history. Christian prayers from those of differing theological persuasions but still within the orthodox umbrella are included under differing categories like periods of time. This tome can be used by the novice as well as the mature and sophisticated especially by those who are students of prayer,its history and passion for its varieties of expression.

The first serious ethnomusicological study of Malagasy music, Recollecting from the Past evokes the complex sound and performative aesthetic in Madagascar called maresaka. Maresaka pertains not only to musical expression but extends into ways of remembering the past, aesthetics of everyday life, and Malagasy concepts of self and community.

Ron Emoff focuses on tromba spirit possession ceremonies in which Malagasy use devotional practice as an occasion to expressively re-figure worlds often impeded by colonialism and postcolonial phenomena, extreme material poverty, and widespread illness. Malagasy not only preserve the past, but they interpret, revalue and transform it to their own ends. Music is crucial to these performances since powerful ancestral spirits will not enter into the present if not enticed by masterful musical performances, and so music itself provides a complex symbolic system with which Malagasy can recall and reconstruct the past. This groundbreaking study will be of interest to readers in the fields of anthropology, ethnomusicology, cultural studies, African studies, postcolonial and performance studies.

Dr. Emoff opens the door to a culture that most will never have the chance to experience. Recollecting from the Past provides a historical account of Madagascar, enabling a better understanding of the various cultures. Dr. Emoff's personal experices with people on the east coast paint a picture of life in Madagascar and how musical practices play an important part in Malagasy life.

Want to know bit more about how the traditions of Western music connect with Newtonian science and our approaches to the scientific method and the development of technology? Interested in exploring the cultural relationships between music as an art form and the societies which produced it? Then this is the book for you. First appearing over 30 years ago. this has become a 'must' for all undergraduate music students as well as people with a general interest in the arts and how they relate to the societies they grew out of.
This is an 'ideas 'book par excellence. Sometimes quite a demanding read, it is, nevertheless, worth the effort. You are going to hear that Brahms symphony or Bach cantata in a different way once you have read this book. Julian Mincham.

Anyone with an interest in the emergence of Avant-Garde in Western classical music should read this book. Those with general interests in music -- in rock or jazz or "world" -- should also pick it up. Small's well-argued points about Western ideals and preconceptions of music -- especially its limitations -- are compelling. A classic in music scholarship!

Jarring and disjointed

This book of poetry was a huge let-down after reading "Eating in the Underworld." I found her interpretations of the Persephone/Demeter myth in that first book stunning, some of the best poetry I've ever read. With "The Last Clear Narrative," it literally felt like a different poet. The poetry was very jerky and erratic, often nonsensical with its phrasing and spacing. Kudos to her if she just wanted to try a different poetic approach, but it makes me hesitant to try her other books.

A new, fresh, and ecumencial perspective!

As someone who has been training future spiritual directors for the past 7 years, I am always looking for resources that bring a new, fresh, and ecumencial perspective to the ancient practice of spiritual direction. Embodied Spirits does that -- and more! Each of the 13 chapters with a different contributor offers insights based upon the author's own experience. This makes the book extraordinarily rich and practical. I particularly delighted in "Rest Works: Quiet Times Fuel Grateful Activity" by Maisie Sparks. I'll certainly be recommending this book to future spiritual directors.

If there is one spiritual direction book you must run out and buy today, Embodied Spirits: Stories of Spiritual Directors of Color is that very book. This anthology of deeply personal and inspiring essays celebrates the anointed voices and testimonies of spiritual directors of color, and reflects the long overdue inclusion of these stories into the canon of spiritual direction literature. Spiritual directors, chaplains, pastoral counselors and other spiritual care providers will be greatly enriched by reading this book. My hope is that the second edition of the book will include more diverse stories that reflect even more of a variety of races, cultures and faith traditions.

This book is intended as an introduction to the science of microlithography for those new to the subject, and it covers advanced topics useful to experienced lithographers who seek information outside their own areas of expertise. Numerous references to the literature in optical lithograpy will guide both novice and experienced lithographers who want greater detail in specific areas.

A number of discussions--such as thin-resist modeling, metrics for imaging, thin-film optics, and the modeling of focus effects--first appeared in Advanced Micro Design internal reports. Eventually, parts of these reports were published elsewhere. Their tutorial nature is not coincidental, as they were analyses that I used to develop my own understanding of lithography. Complex situations often are best comprehended through simple models that describe the relevant physics, with remaining effects considered as perturbations. This is the approach I used in learning lithography and it is the method used here.

Students in my classes on lithography science will recognize many of the figures and equations. Several also appear in the first chapter of the SPIE Handbook on Microlithography, Micromachining, and Microfabrication, Volume I: Microlithography, which I coauthored with Bill Arnold of ASM Lithography. Other topics have been added or significantly expanded, especially those concerning light sources, photomasks, and next-generation lithography. The chapter on photoresists is approached from the perspective of the practicing lithographer, rather than the resist chemist. Some knowledge of resist chemistry is essential for using resists properly, but the emphasis here is on operational considerations.

About the Author
Dr. Harry J. Levinson has worked in microlithography for nearly two decades, at companies such as IBM, Sierra Semiconductor, and Advanced Micro Devices. He has published many articles on lithography science, from thin film optical effects and metrics for imaging to overlay and process control. He teaches courses in lithography science, process control, and total quality management.

Review of "Principles of Lithography," 2nd edition by Harry J. Levinson.

This is an excellent book for engineers, whether in photolithography or not, to acquire an overview and understanding of modern deep sub-micron photolithography and the challenges microlithographers face. It is well written and easy to read. Levinson takes you through the entire process of lithography step by step with both the mathematics involved, but also, an intuitive explanation of what the technical issues involved are. The drawings done for the figures are done well and easily understood and printed with clarity. As for photos used for figures in the book, they are also well done, and of the proper brightness and contrast so that they are easy to view and comprehensible. They are not like some books, where you wonder if the illustration was a fifth generation photocopy or just incomprehensible.

Levinson also includes a chapter on metrology. If you are producing a microlithographic pattern you need to be able to measure it, and critical dimensions in lithography are not dues ex machina.

The book has problem exercises at the end of each chapter to allow the reader to test themselves on what they have learned. I also recommend working out many of the equations as an exercise.

Levinson also doesn't neglect the historical development of the practice of lithography. There is an explanation on why early lithography tended to have high overexposure and then went to 1:1 imaging and issues driving this. Also, there is a good chapter on the claims in the 1980s that optical lithography would not get past 1 micron resolution, and why this subsequently didn't prove to be true. Levinson bravely also writes up a section on the future limits of lithography and in a few years we will see if he was right. Regardless whether he will turn out to be right or not, it is an excellent explanation of the challenges involved. I think that there is an under appreciation that of the tremendous obstacles overcome in the advancement of microlithography. It isn't an automatic step down, and we do face the prospect that maybe 65 nm or 45 nm or 32 nm or 22nm will be the end.

Next generation lithography is not neglected either and Levinson reviews the technologies and challenges for each of them.

The book is a worthy successor to David Elliot's handbook on photolithography. (Perhaps some of you will regard that as paleolithography.) It is not expensive and should be on your book shelf.

I wrote a supplementary paper in WORD for this book. I work out some of the equations in more detail than the text making it easier to understand.
