Critical Theory needs critical response

It's amazing that people can judge a book by reading excerpts on the net. Critical Theory and Science Fiction is not an easy read but CT never was or will be. You don't have to agree with the Marxist theories of Bloch and Adorno, Carl Freedman uses to make his various points, to appreciate his insights and the challenges he throws at the reader. That is what academics are supposed to do and not to wallow in old cliche's and easy answers. The "excursuses" (his term) into classic SF novels such as Stanislaw Lem's SOLARIS, Ursula Le Guin's THE DISPOSSESSED, Joanna Russ' THE TWO OF THEM, Samuel Delany's STARS IN MY POCKET LIKE GRAINS OF SANDS and the greatest SF writer, Philip K Dick's THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE are lessons every SF reader and writer should make their own. At least Freedman is raising the level of SF discourse beyond Star Trek Convensions or Star Wars hype.

Excellent Overview

This book provides a superb introduction to the Celtic Christian vision. I particularly enjoy the trinitarian aspects of Celtic prayer. The vision and picture presented in the book reveals a Chritian faith that does not divide the sacred from the secular or the mind and the body and soul. But rather, it presents a picture of faith affecting every area of life.

"One of the greatest obstacles to living the Christian life in contemporary society is an impoverished imagination. Most of us will find it difficult to live a life we cannot imagine" (Phillip Kenneson professor of theology and philosophy at Milligan College). Like how the Bible challenges our expectations of what God can do and how humans can respond, Esther De Waal, in her book Every Earthly Blessing, offers an accessible and engaging account of the Celtic way of life to further challenge the compartmentalization of what it means to walk humbly with our God. It is an account of a rugged people at the edge of the known western world that received Christianity and incorporated it into all facets of their daily lives, from performing household chores, to their coexistence with animals, to their art and healing, to their wide acceptance of monastic life dedicated to Christ, and even to self imposed exile from home to be led by God for His sake. De Waal skillfully presents the Celtic understanding of the wholeness between all of creation and redemption in an eloquent balance between academic study and words to the heart, the latter being essential for accurate portrayal of this Celtic form of Christianity. De Waal's goal is not to convert readers to a denomination, herself being Anglican; her hope is that this book "becomes life-giving [to readers] on their own Christian journey." On that, she has succeeded with me.

Great introduction into Celtic thought

This book is a good overview of information on the Celtic thoughts related to monks, pilgrims, creation, sin, the meaning behind the Celtic crosses, and the Celtic belief that the spiritual and the natural world are not separate.

Two things that I learned from this book: There are plants that the Celtic Christians avoided because of their roles in persecuting Christ. For example:The aspen tree. They would hurl stones and dirt at it when they passed because they were reminded that this was the type of tree Christ died on. No one used the wood from this tree for farm implements or fishing boats. The other interesting part was the explanation of the illustrations on the high Celtic crosses. The crucified Christ is depicted wearing a long robe, showing at once the suffering of the dying Christ and the victory of the risen one. This "shows the Celtic ability to hold two things in tension: death and life brought together."

Facinating stuff. Wish the book had been longer and more in depth.

Seminal Poetry Book

Few books of poetry have affected me as much as this book. When I think about great American poets or teach students how to write modern poetry, this is the book and these are the poems I rely on. His poems are power punches. His endings are beautiful. His poems are classics. And his final poem, To the Muse, is one of the best poems every written. Buy this book for you and all your friends!

Terrific book of poetry

James Wright is probably most associated with nature poetry but his work can be very political as well. He can be a harsh critic of mid-century middle America. he is deffinately an advocate for the poor and the drunk. I think his two mid carreer books are by far his best, which would be this one and also "The branch will not Break." I have read each book at least 4 times. There are slight auras of beat poetry and Chinese poetry here but he definately has his own voice and subject matter. His influences are more pleasant echoes than the heart of his work.

Excellent introduction to medical imaging.

Great Book if you are interested in the basics of medical imaging. Covers a very good introduction to linear system theory (MTF, DQE, NEQ, NPS) and dedicated chapters for flat panel detectors, mammography MRI, 3D Ultrasound imaging and tomographic imaging. With lots of citations which are given at the end of each chapter.
This are actually 2 books (part 1 and 2). So make sure you get both.

Image, Syntax, and Mystery

Reading Prado's poetry is like taking a ride on a feisty mare. Part of the joy is all that muscle between your legs running with more power than a human will ever know. And that's the source also of terror. But Prado's terror is nothing worse than looking down into the mouth of death (most often, her father's) and being both intrigued and repulsed by its sweet sick odor. Like the above reviewer, I'm an atheist (or agnostic at best), but nevertheless Prado's devotion to her God doesn't make me break out in hives. She questions her spirituality as much as she devotes herself to it, and since I don't have the answers either, I appreciate her guts. Plus, she's so lusty, I get all wambly just reading her.

For example: "Can a woman have twenty orgasms? / I don't worry about such silly details. / I want love, superior love." And, "After the grave, the clock goes on ticking,/ someone makes coffee, everybody drinks it." (from "Concerted Effort.")

If you like the raveling syntax of David Kirby (without the smart-aleckiness); if you like the texture of Steve Orlen; if you like the spiritual questing in the common things of this world of Robert Hass; and especially if you like feeling like the author is sitting there with you chatting over a cup of yerba matte' about birth, death, and in-between, get this book.

One of my favorite books of poems

This is an absolute must-buy. If you like the poetry of fellow Brazilian Carlos Drummond de Andrade (and you should, because he's brilliant-- trans by Mark Strand and Elizabeth Bishop, title: "Running in the Family"), you'll love Prado. She is complicated, frank, has balls, and expresses the most amazing HYSTERIA. I mean, you'll be BLOWN away by this book. Takes lines like: "I'm not so ugly / that I can't get married."
She also has an outrageous devotion to God, not unlike Gerald Manley Hopkins-- which even an atheist like me can appreciate. In some ways, she's doing what I wish more contemporary American female poets were doing. She hits gender issues head on, in an utterly flamboyent, decadent, laughing/screaming kind of way.
I rank this book among my very favorites, among Stevens, among Plath, among Celan, among Rilke, among Trakl. If I could only keep ten books, this would be one. And I wish there were more translations of her work. Will someone please take on this project? I would if I knew Portequese.

But Fuchs also examines the tough issues of racial and ethnic conflict and the problems of the ethno-underclass, the new outsiders. The American Kaleidoscope ends with a searching analysis of public policies that protect individual rights and enable ethnic diversity to prosper.

Because of his lifelong involvement with issues of race relations and ethnicity, Lawrence H. Fuchs is singularly qualified to write on a grand scale about the interdependence in the United States of the unum and the pluribus. His book helps to clarify some difficult issues that policymakers will surely face in the future, such as those dealing with immigration, language, and affirmative action.

Fuchs contends that Americans of European descent abandoned their quest to maintain a racially exclusive society only within the last three decades. Fuchs investigates the complex relationship between the American character and growing ethnic diversity. In a well-researched, compelling argument which questions the major scholarship of the last 20 years, he contends that ethnic diversity has defined the American character and fosters unity rather than divisiveness. Tracing the assimilation of the major immigrant groups into the American mainstream during the 18th and 19th centuries, Fuchs demonstrates that a civic culture built upon civil rights for culturally diverse peoples served as the foundation of the American experience; an inclusive post-World War II pluralism involved at least the partial integration of blacks, Native Americans, Asians, and Mexican-Americans into the civic culture. Though not overlooking the continued underclass status of some groups, Fuchs timely book should be closely read by all types of audiences.

A fine and very readable scholarly work

I first encountered the writings of Professor Fuchs in a graduate seminar on Asian American history. I found him to be both highly readable and balanced in his commentary. This book traces the history of racial and ethnic relations in the U.S. from the perspective of immigration and assimilation. It also confronts the concern for acculturation without resorting to polemics or diatribe. Above all, it makes a cogent and convincing argument for revalidating America's unique civic culture at a time when balkanization is leading us astray as a people. If read in conjunction with some of the more recent writings of Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., it will illuminate further. A reasoned counterargument to the excesses of critical race theory and postmodernism.

Moving beyond the acknowledgement that modern dance has its roots in Orientalist appropriation, Yutian Wong considers the effect that invisible Orientalism has on the reception of work by Asian American choreographers and the conceptualization of Asian American performance as a category. Drawing on ethnographic and choreographic research methods, the author follows the work of Club O’ Noodles—a Vietnamese American performance ensemble—to understand how Asian American artists respond to competing narratives of representation, aesthetics, and social activism that often frame the production of Asian American performance.
