About the Author

Mary C. Earle, an Episcopal priest, retreat leader and spiritual director, is the author of Julian of Norwich: Selections from Revelations of Divine Love Annotated & Explained; The Desert Mothers: Spiritual Practices from the Women of the Wilderness and Celtic Christian Spirituality: Essential Writings Annotated and Explained; and coauthor of Holy Companions: Spiritual Practices from the Celtic Saints and Praying with the Celtic Saints. In addition to four books on the spirituality of living with illness, she has written for explorefaith.org. She has been introducing the writings of Julian in seminary classes, retreats and conferences for over twenty years.

A wonderful book

This is a marvelous little book on Celtic Spirituality. The authors use both well-known and lesser-known saints as icons into spiritual wisdom. You will find this book is both a great read and useful tool for understanding the spirituality of the Celtic Saints - and applying their wisdom to everyday life.

I have used this book with high school students and adults and all have enjoyed the wisdom that can be gleaned from these pages. This book is useful for both those new to Celtic Spirituality and the Celtophile.

Handbook of prayer

I am carrying this book behind my Bible in my "industrial" Bible cover.

It not only allows me to share some great praise and worship with others, but leaves it handy for me for quieter moments.

I just ordered the "Carmina Gadelica", because I wanted more.

Sixth Century Saints live large lives

Holy Companions shares the spiritual practices in short meditative bios, for sixteen Celtic Saints. These are men and women whose Christian life was reflective of the prayer and power we read about in the New Testament. Their lives were not easy, even so, their faith was resolute and the graces they share with us today are remarkable. Two favorites, I never had heard of until this little book: Saint Non of Wales, known for HOLY MOTHERING and disearning when to let go of that mothering and move on. The other, Saint Winefride, also of Wales with an insight into facing wounding and healing, death and resurrection in our own rising from the detours in our own lives. I found it most invaluable. There is an excellent bibliography for further reading. This is a gem of a collection that will be enjoyed often. It is indeed a Holy Companion.

Every spiritual director soon recognizes that the paths to God are multiple and individuals describe their journeys with varying images, language, and theological foundations. Norvene Vest reflects Spiritual Directors International's (SDI) mission of "tending the holy around the world and across traditions" in her book title, and offers a collection from some of the world's great spiritual traditions, as well as more recent approaches. Each piece is written by a recognized expert or practitioner in a system. Writers include Tejadhammo, Chapple, Weiss, Cowan, Myers, Plattig, Howard, Mostyn, Mabry, Vest, and Santmire, most of whom are Spiritual Directors International members.
Part I is about global faith traditions: Buddhism, Sufi mysticism, Indian religions in the person of the guru, and Judaism. Part II presents some classic Christian traditions: Ignatian, Carmelite, Benedictine, and the less frequently articulated Evangelical. Finally, "Special Spiritual Perspectives," focuses on contemporary concerns: nature, the poor, institutional direction, "care and feeding" of Gen-Xers, and feminist direction. Bibliography and footnotes provide additional resources for each topic. Several contributors approach their subject by building
on autobiographical foundations: both Benedictine and Sufi writers address the impact on their lives of being participants in each tradition. Some essays are more introductory descriptions of a tradition and its underlying spiritual assumptions, language, and imagery of the spiritual journey. Other essays, namely those on Judaism and the Evangelical Christian path, concentrate on spiritual trends within a tradition that impact the dynamics of direction. Authors integrate their overviews
with a look at practical implications for directors. Though written by experts, the book aims at a broad-based audience. As a result, the text is a valuable resource for those wishing to broaden their insights into
basic concepts of traditions other than Christianity, for those who are participants in spiritual direction training programs and want introductions to some classic paths, and for those who want to reflect on recent developments and social concerns. The text can also help an
individual seeking a language and tradition in which to
express his or her own spiritual experience. A number of themes cross the varied traditions in their understanding of the ministry of spiritual direction: an openness to truth, the need for a transparency of spirit, a commitment to the ongoing nature of spiritual maturation, and an orientation that moves one toward community and the world are recurring elements seen as essential. The essays clarify for readers and directors the diverse ways that people relate to direction, and how culturally
conditioned spiritual practices and ways of articulating God experiences can be. The image of directors being "practitioners who have plunged into the depths" themselves is another consistent thread woven through differing traditions. Given the caliber of writing and content of these essays, one can hope that subsequent volumes including additional spiritual traditions will follow. This volume is the first to bear the
Morehouse- SDI joint imprint. '

excellent compilation

Norvene Vest has done an excellent job of compiling a broad spectrum of people who participate in a variety of types of spiritual direction. It is vital for the spiritual director to have at least a basic understanding of a variety of generations seeking direction. This book offers that very clearly. Post modern directees differ greatly in need and reaction and expectation from moderns and even from their younger counterparts. It is vital to know this, and Vest does a good job of gathering those authors who can explain and clarify what the director must know of new directees before beginning a relationship. Anyone assuming all people come to spiritual direction for the same reason or with the same understandings as themselves needs to read this book.

An Open and Enlightening Perspective to Other Traditions

This is a very helpful book, very helpful.

Since the time this book was originally published, the practice of spiritual formation and spiritual direction has continued to move to the front of many conversations in the realm of those who would profess to "be spiritual but not religious." It is true that spiritual direction as a practice is also gaining prominence among those who are religious as well...at least I think it is, observations in the circles I travel prove this true to me. In light of these comments, it is helpful to understand what spiritual direction is and what it means across a diverse group of people sharing different "spiritual" beliefs.

The following is from the back cover of Tending the Holy:

"The contributors to Tending the Holy explore what spiritual direction looks like--and what questions are asked--through a variety of lenses. From an examination of the spiritual direction relationship in the Evangelical Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Sufi, and Hindu traditions, to the Benedictines, Carmelites, and Ignatians, and finally, to the contemporary lenses of feminism, Generation X, the institutional perspective, and even one based on the natural world and the spirituality of St Francis of Assisi, this collection explores unexplored territory. Tending the Holy is a provocative and cutting-edge resource foe spiritual directors and pastoral counselors."

Norvene Vest, a spiritual director herself, serves as the editor for this collection of essays and has organized the book into three primary sections. Part one includes perspectives from worldwide faith traditions outside of the mainstream of Christianity. Part two of the book focuses on the Christian traditions and part three addresses a few special spiritual perspectives that are predominately Christian perspectives, but are located more on the periphery of the mainstream.

I found the information about these various streams and perspectives very enlightening, but even more than the information itself, was the attitude that the authors wrote their particular essay. I did not sense any proselytizing biases, but more to the contrary, there seemed a universal respect and openness to all other perspectives and traditions of spirituality. This "attitude," whether perceived or otherwise helped me to read with openness and welcome learning from traditions other than my own. I believe I have been made better for it.

The book can be read straight through, but I am finding myself returning to it again and again as a wonderful resource and reading individual chapters. I have particularly enjoyed going back to read chapter ten (Transforming Institutions) and eleven (The Care and Feeding of the Gen-X Soul) on several occasions. I am sure I will be learning from these essays for some time.

I do wish there was a dedicated bibliography or a recommended reading section, but there is a well documented notes section at the end of the book that can fill this wish. This is a well-written and very helpful book. It might serve to break down barriers and stereotypes that have been harmful to relationships both in the traditions of Christianity and for interfaith discussions.

Why have so many contemporary poets who write free verse in English become so enamored of the ghazal, a difficult Arabic form? In the introduction to this wonderfully stimulating collection of recent ghazals by 107 poets, editor and poet Ali discusses the tradition's long legacy, which harkens back at least to the seventh century, and its unique stipulations. The name refers to "the cry of the gazelle when it is cornered in the hunt and knows it will die," a clue to its classic melancholia. The form consists of a series of discrete couplets in which the second line offers a surprising spin on the first. One rhyme scheme runs throughout the poem, and the rhyme must precede the refrain. This leads to an "epigrammatic terseness" that does not belie great depth of longing or, in the hands of modern poets, nimble wit and tempered joy. The ghazal truly is an enchanting form, and each poet, including Diane Ackerman, W. S. A Ravishing Introduction

I'm a great admirer of the editor's own poetry, particularly his ghazals. The introductory essay that begins this collection is extremely valuable to any student of this poetic form, which is not yet fully appreciated--or practiced--in the West. Prior to his far-too-early death, Ali was a great champion of the ghazal.

The ghazals of the contributing poets are mixed in their level of success. None are unworthy of scrutiny.

Sara Suleri Goodyear's afterword, and the editor's inclusion of a list of basic points that follows it, are also of value to anyone attempting to write poetry in this form.

What a timely book with the potential to completely transform poetry and poetics as we know it! If Aga Shahid Ali's arguments for the Ghazal do not transform your sense of what you are doing as a poet, or what you think is happening in contemporary poetry, then the sheer vitality, cosmopolitanism, and incisive relevance of the poems in this collection will certainly do so.

Heart Medicine

Early in the mornings (most days), I make toast and coffee, feed my cat and then sit in a comfortable red chair, often with a throw, partake of "bread and wine" and give thanks to God that I have been given the gift of life. My mind wanders the world of people and events and sometimes places.

Part of my routine for the last three months has been to read a daily meditation from Mary Earle's aptly named book, Days of Grace. The meditations are grounded in how life is rather than how I so often desire it to be. I have been struck by the creative way Mary has painted practices in response to events that could embitter or crush. I have been enabled to see God's presence in my own life when, instead, I could have dwelled where God was not. Can there be any place where God is not? I find that as I live with Days of Grace my heart is being softened.

Do I recommend Days of Grace? Oh, yes, yes, yes!

About the Author
Prof. Steven S. Saliterman teaches bioMEMS and senior design in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Minnesota. He is a faculty member of the Nano & Microsystems Applications Center, past Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Methodist Hospital, diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, and CLIA certified Clinical Laboratory Director.

He is a former research intern at the NASA Johnson Space Center and research fellow at the NASA Ames Research Center. He participated in early design of the Space Shuttle Space Lab and developed implantable devices for space research. He designed and patented a system for simulating critical care patient management, inclusive of a manikin apparatus for practicing heart catheterization.

His current research is in biomaterials, bioMEMS and nanotechnologies. He has been a guest lecturer at Johns Hopkins and the Mayo Clinic; and guest speaker at the design of Medical Devices conference sponsored by University of Minnesota, and the MedEdge International conference sponsored by Minnesota Medical Alley.

Excellent LIterature

I purchased the book in order to take the BioMEMs class offered by the University of Minnesota and taught by the author, Dr.Saliterman. As a Biomedical Engineer, it provided a very realistic and complete view on the engineering applications of the medical field in relation to medicine. Although not overly deep, the book is very well written and allows for easy understanding of the material. I found that the reaches of engineering can be extended to many devices and fields with encouraging results.

I thought that the book was a highly informative, interesting, and educational read that I will be keeping with me through medical school.

Very extensive, but hard to read.

I bought this book for my work in order to get a better understanding of the bio side of MEMS. Having a physics background, it is sometimes difficult to understand the needs of the medical and life sciences with respect to MEMS devices.

I think the book is very complete, it tries to incorporate all aspects of biomems, but everything is touched on only shortly. The book tries to be readable for both MEMS fabrication engineers (me) and for the medical field. But I feel that it failed in doing so by not elaborating enough. It is a steep learning curve for people with no background in chemistry.

On the other hand, it will probably find it's way on the shelve of many medical microdevice designers as it is very extensive and because of its completeness, gets 4 stars from me.

Although being allegedly a second edition of the volume published by the SPIE Press in 2000, this book can be safely said to be new in terms of both much larger size and much more comprehensive and systematic coverage. The main objective of the book is to summarize the entire area of tissue optics: theory, measurement techniques, analysis techniques, and medical diagnostics applications, with a special (and highly appreciated) emphasis on the electromagnetic (vector) nature of light. This objective is accomplished, albeit in a particular way.

Indeed, the book can hardly be recommended as an undergraduate or a graduate textbook since some basic material is assumed to be known to the reader and is largely skipped. This is especially true of the fundamentals of electromagnetics and electromagnetic scattering, both single and multiple. In this respect Tissue Optics cannot replace classical treatises on the subject of light scattering by particles and particulate media such as the renowned books by van de Hulst, Chandrasekhar, and Ishimaru as well as several more recent and more specialized textbooks.

However, the new book by Tuchin is truly unique in terms of its coverage. In this respect it is an ideal supplement to various undergraduate and graduate courses. Especially useful are the two detailed and substantial glossaries (the first one is on physics, statistics and engineering; the second one is on medicine, biology, and chemistry), the nomenclature section, the list of acronyms, and the 1283-entry reference list.

Besides this unquestionably worthy role, Tissue Optics is an everyday must for all postdoctoral fellows, researchers, and medical practicioners dealing with some or all of the aspects of light scattering by tissues. This handbook belongs on the scientist's office table rather than on a library bookshelf.

In summary, the title of the book is provacatively ambitious, yet the result is a valuable and comprehensive encyclopedia of the subject of tissue optics written on a high professional level. The book is nicely printed using the 11 pt font much appreciated by the aging eyes of this reviewer. This inexpensive book has a durable, sturdy binding and is a great bargain for its size, coverage, and scientific quality. --Michael I. Valery V. Tuchin is Professor and Optics Chair at Saratov State University (Russia), where he was Dean of Physics Faculty from 1982-1989. His research interests include biomedical optics and laser medicine, nonlinear dynamics of laser and biophysical systems, and physics of optical and laser measurements. He teaches courses on optics, tissue optics, laser and fiber optics in biomedicine, laser dynamics and biophysics for undergraduates and graduate students and international audiences. He has authored or edited 20 books.

The autobiographies include the lives of Venture Smith, a native of Africa who ended his days as a resident of East Haddam, Connecticut; James Mars, born a slave near Norfolk, Connecticut in 1790, and freed at twenty-five by state law; William Grimes, a native of Virginia, who became Connecticut’s first known runway when he arrived in New Haven about 1808; G.W. Offley, from Maryland, who was bought free by his father and later settled in Hartford; and James L. Smith, of Virginia birth, who escaped from slavery and settled in Norwich, Connecticut.
