Assistant Professor of Africana Studies and History at New York University, Tricia Rose sorts through rap's multiple voices by exploring its underlying urban cultural politics, particularly the influential New York City rap scene, and discusses rap as a unique musical form in which traditional African-based oral traditions fuse with cutting-edge music technologies. Next she takes up rap's racial politics, its sharp criticisms of the police and the government, and the responses of those institutions. Finally, she explores the complex sexual politics of rap, including questions of misogyny, sexual domination, and female rappers' critiques of men.

But these debates do not overshadow rappers' own words and thoughts. Rose also closely examines the lyrics and videos for songs by artists such as Public Enemy, KRS-One, Salt N' Pepa, MC Lyte, and L. L. Cool J. and draws on candid interviews with Queen Latifah, music producer Eric "Vietnam" Sadler, dancer Crazy Legs, and others to paint the full range of rap's political and aesthetic spectrum. Rap music often blasts African American rage into mainstream American culture and with its call-and-response choruses and violent, no-holds-barred lyrics, questions societal tradition and authority. These assertions aren't hard to prove. The problem lies in explaining all this without forgetting that most of this music's impact depends on having a good beat and being danceable. Rose, an assistant professor of history and Africana studies at New York University, is generally successful in putting rap in the context of the urban noise, technology and socioeconomics that nurtures it and of the "slave dances, blues lyrics, Mardi Gras parades, Jamaican patois, toasts and signifying" that preceded it. Rose addresses sexism, both in the plight of women rappers and in rap lyrics, partially excusing the latter by saying, "Rap's sexist lyrics are also part of a rampant and viciously normalized sexism that dominates the corporate culture of the music business." Supporting her thesis are direct interviews with rappers, personal remembrances and anecdotes, as well as deconstruction of lyrics and videos. Although her analyses are often fascinating, in sentences like "Rappers are constantly taking dominant discursive fragments and throwing them into relief destabilizing hegemonic discourses and attempting to legitimate counter/hegemonic interpretations," Rose becomes unnecessarily obscurantist, forgetting to let the music speak for itself. This ethnographic study is the first detailed exploration of rap music within its social, cultural, and artistic contexts. Rose (history/Africana studies, NYU) carefully analyzes each defining element of the genre. For example, her study of the cultural and technological implications of sampling-a pillar of rap-is both impressive and unprecedented. Further, Rose's hermeneutics extend beyond the music itself to such corollary expressions of hiphop style as rap music videos and breakdancing. Rose constructs a solid bridge between hiphop and academe: she explains the former in the language of the latter and does so splendidly. However, even the most powerful words cannot recreate music. Since academicians may be unfamiliar with the works discussed, an accompanying CD or cassette would have been helpful. While Brian Cross's less-rigorous It's Not About a Salary (LJ 2/15/94) remains a better choice for public libraries, Black Noise belongs on the shelves of almost every academic collection.

Rap recordings are discussed almost everywhere today, from schoolyards and subways to the U.S. Senate and Supreme Court. Rose thoroughly analyzes several facets of the musical genre and provides an effective antidote to the severely flawed hip-hop coverage in mainstream media. She accurately traces rap's sonic history (proving thereby that music does not require conventional melody or harmony) and gives substantial information about the innovative rhythmic manipulations made possible by the techniques of sampling. She also makes clear the connections between rap's beginnings and the political turmoils that afflicted black and Latino urban neighborhoods throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In discussing what is probably rap's most controversial aspect--lyrics supposedly advocating "cop killing"--Rose vividly delineates the social conditions that bring about such fierce responses to real-life police brutality. Finally, she examines the often neglected role of women in rap in rewarding depth. Fans, scholars, and detractors alike stand to learn a great deal by studying Rose's commendable treatise. Tricia Rose details the Hip-Hop Culture - and its beauty and depth - in this book I call "essential for Hip-Hoppers". For example: I'm writing 'bout Brazilian hip-hop and "Black Noise" cleared many doubts I had on hystoric, artistic, and politic aspects of the 'Culture of Streetz'. Another contribution that elevates this 'Bible of Hip-Hop' is the way Tricia Rose writes. The words flow natural, with many rich informations reduced in a very agradable text. If you don't like this book, you'll never understand the 'Black Noise' of this new millenium! Peace!

Very interesting (but "brilliant"???)

This is an impressive interpretation of Black musical culture, with loads of interesting information and pertinent feminist content. I've read several books with somewhat similar subject matter, from Dick Hebdige's broad and helpful survey to the rather pretentious book by Russell Potter; but none of them captured my interest as much as this one.

"Nostalgia and Inspiration At Its Best!"

The Rev. Philip W. Snyder's, "River Trips, Revelations and Old Trees" is a delightful collection of memories infused with a well-seasoned pastor's ability to convey the wonder and mystery of God. With Fr. Snyder's love of family and sense of awe in ordinary things such as a passing train, a picnic at the Six Mile Water Works near his childhood home in Albany, or a romp through an old attic, the reader is invited to explore the workings of God in a new and refreshing way. Each meditation is prefixed with a scripture passage that is neatly woven into the reflections of the author. The thoughtfully crafted words of each meditation are neat and straightforward and invite the reader to a meditative posture. Indeed, Fr. Snyder's work is a milestone of poetic reflection on the things one might easily discard or take for granted. One footnote: the sub-title is listed as "Meditations for Men". This reader would cite the sub-title as a misnomer, in that "River Trips, Reflections and Old Trees" is most suitable for both men and women as they seek to deepen their relationship with God. Rate this one an A+++. The Very Rev. David G. Bollinger

I recently read River Trips, Revelations, and Old Trees, by Philip W. Snyder. I loved it! It was perhaps the most inspirational piece of writing I have ever had the privilege to set my eyes upon. It was very inspirational and because of this book, the relationship between me and my wife is better than ever. If you want to read a truly remarkable book, read River Trips, Revelations, and Old Trees. It will be the best decision you will ever make.

I had this book when I was a child back in the late 1960s. I have always remembered it and was happy to find it on Amazon. It is a wonder story of a wrong made right by hero's that came to her rescue and I loved the details describing the tree and doll house Miss Suzy lived in. Worth the money for a trip down memory lane.

Like finding a long lost childhood friend.........

I loved this book as a child. One of the greatest treasures my parents gave me was a well-stocked library of books. I had several books I read over and over again and "Miss Suzy" was one of my very favorites. My imagination would always take flight when I read this book and I used become really involved in the life of Miss Suzy and the toy soldiers.

I have searched far and wide for this book, and this was made even more challenging by the fact that - eventhough I knew the story by heart - I couldn't remember the title of the book or the author's name. I just remembered the little squirrel who was driven out of her beloved home by a band of mean squirrels. She had to take refuge in a little dollhouse and became friends with a band of toy soldiers. Imagine my excitement when, upon browsing through the internet one day, I discovered the title of this book and that Amazon carries it!!

I have since read this book to my children many times and we all enjoy it. Rediscovering "Miss Suzy" is like finding a friend that you thought you lost and I am happy to be able to share this story to my children.

dealing with a common fear

in Frank Asch's _Milk and Cookies_ the author introduces the common childhood fears of monsters, and presents a story which helps children overcome that fear.
Mama, Papa, and baby bear are visiting at Grandma and Grampa's house. They spend the night. Baby bear looks through the cellar door to see Grampa feeding "a dragon" in the cellar, which is actually a wood stove. Later baby bear has a dream of a dragon coming upstairs, which eats all his milk and cookies. Crying baby bear is then taken downstairs by his father to see "the dragon." After that, baby bear is no longer scared; he and his grandparents and parents all eat milk and cookies.
My 3-year old son loves this book. He sympathizes with baby bear, and he loves the way the story is resolved, of course. I'd recommend this, as well as Frank Asch's book _Goodbye, House_ as excellent books for children aged 3.

Milk and Cookies

I used to be a Teacher Aide for a daycare for kids ages 2-4. Every day before naptime the kids would beg me to read this book to them. And not just once but twice! They loved when the baby bear went down to see the dragon. And at the end of the story they would all shout the last line "milk and cookies"!! Since then I have had a baby of my own and would like to get a copy of this book that sure will be a favorite with my daughtor.

The author explores color and shape in it's simplest form to enable childres to absorb the illustration quickly and easily, thus they hear the full meaning of the words at the same time. Excellent teaching reading book for k-2

Culture Wars? Music within National Self-Image

Jonathan Holt Shannon, author of this book, is an anthropologist whose research uses the performance, forms, and religious, political, and social aspects of music as the focus to examine the roles of traditions or heritage versus and modernity in Syria specifically, and also among Levantine Arabs. The conservative forces of authenticity are in conflict with the often liberal elite views of incorporating modern, i.e., European or Western classical and popular, structures in music. The problem arises from the very existence of Syria as a relatively new nation (1946) carved out of the centuries old Ottoman Empire. For a Mediterranean area at the crossroads of empires, East and West, authenticity is a highly moot matter among indigenous scholars, critics, and musicians. Aside some agrarian folk tunes and dances, perhaps, how much of Arabian music is truly Arabian when Turkish, Persian, Byzantine, Kurdish, Andalusian, and Syriac Christian influences are found? Even the oud is closely related to the Chinese pipa, lutes having developed, shared, and adopted along the length of the Silk Road. This book seems to present more questions than answers: a very good thing, since Orientialism and stereotypes have influenced Arabs and Western scholars alike. Even the number, names, and origins of maqam modes are debated.

Scholarly but highly readable, Among the Jasmin Trees is a perfect follow-up book to Racy's Making Music in the Arab World, Waugh's Memory, Music, and Religion, and Marcus's survey and documentary CD, Music in Egypt. The scholar-musician tells delightful anecdotes, and interviews with many Syrian experts send him, and us, on a grand tour of the complex musical and cultural issues confronting this people. If these questions seems esoteric and not germane to our own contemporary life, consider when and how the United States developed its own unique American (not including Native American) music after 1776. This surprising, worthwhile book has lessons for us as well. After reading it, Arabic music is no longer a simple category.

This book on music and people deals with authenticity and its construction in a place where music is much more than just music. Scholarly in its orientation, it is written so clearly that one needn't be an ethnomusicologist or anthropologist to read it. It has important implications for the way that we all approach the aesthetics of our identity.
