Camus ( The Stranger ) was one of the editors of Combat , a newspaper of the French Resistance, during the last two years of WW II and after. This collection makes available in English for the first time 40 editorials he wrote for the paper and his letter of resignation. The pieces allow readers to track his political evolution at the time, groping his way from "machine guns when necessary" to "the refusal to legitimize murder," as his disillusion with post-Liberation French politics grew. Regrettably, few things age as badly as newspaper editorials. Although Camus declaims, "We need words that are more direct and true," the writing here often is bloated and pompous. De Gramont's translation reads well, and his introductory essay is succinct and informative, briefly tracing the history of the Resistance and Camus's role in it. The book does contain flashes of the moral outrage that won this Nobel laureate acclaim as a novelist and essayist, and its historical interest is undeniable, but readers looking for more will be disappointed.

Thoughtful and well organized, documented by an informative 32-page introduction as well as by notes, this book presents Camus's (1913-1960) political credo during 1944-47. At that time, he was editor of the journal Combat , initially published clandestinely by the French Resistance. Until now, only a few of the editorials have appeared in English; this book collects 41 of the most important, dealing with Camus's views on the nature of revolution, his hopes for the new society (which he thought would emerge after the war), and his gradual disillusionment with the impact the Resistance would have on French politics. The title is taken from a 1945 editorial, "On the Bombing of Hiroshima," which asks that we "choose definitely between hell and reason." For those familiar only with Camus's novels and theater, this is an excellent introduction to the political thinking that illuminates all his work.

Good essays, but collected better elsewhere

I liked the essays, but I liked them better in the more fleshed out "Camus at Combat," which in my opinion has better translations for the English reader.

Freedom, justice and peace

These selected editorials for the Resistance newspaper Combat written from 1944 till 1947 reflect perfectly Albert Camus’ vision on international and national politics, on economic and social issues and on the cardinal conditions necessary for human happiness, the ultimate aim of all human actions: freedom, justice and peace.
The ultimate aim of all human actions
Albert Camus’ nirvana for mankind is ‘a superior order that will give us a nation at peace with itself and its destiny, where each has his share of work and leisure, where workers can work without bitterness and envy, where the artist can create without being tormented by the sadness of man.’
Justice and freedom (also for the media)
For Albert Camus, justice means ‘a social state in which each individual starts with equal opportunity, and in which the country’s majority cannot be held in abject conditions by a privileged few’ (those who possess the privileges of money).
For him, freedom means ‘a political climate in which the human being is respected for what he is and for what he says.’
Liberty also means a free press, independent from the powers of money. For Albert Camus, ‘a country is worth whatever its press is worth.’
Economics, politics
What Albert Camus wants is ‘a collectivist economy and a liberal political structure’ (democracy), ‘under which each man is solely responsible for his own happiness and his own destiny.’
Albert Camus was not a communist, because he didn’t believe in historic determinism, what he called ‘the Marxist coherent philosophy of history.’
Peace, not war
For Albert Camus, peace is the only political goal worth struggling for. Internationally, it means that the great powers will not have superior rights over small and middle-sized nations.
He harshly condemned the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki: ‘our technical civilization reached its greatest level of savagery. Science devotes itself to organized murder.’
Albert Camus was a true democrat, marked by the devastating cruelties of two world wars. His father died in WW I. Before and during WW II, he saw the abominable tyranny of fascist regimes. He understood all too clearly the importance of freedom for human happiness, but also its power (free speech) and its openness to action (revolt). He was, indeed, a dangerous writer (Olivier Todd), certainly for the powers that be. He was also a genuine Nobel Prize winner..
Today, our media environment is a far cry from what Albert Camus really wanted, with its media conglomerates controlled by existing big economic / financial interests and its journalists serving as obsequious mouthpieces for the powerful. Where are the Albert Camus of today?
A must read, and certainly for all Albert Camus fans.
