The crucial split in the town of Sadbury illustrates the grave difficulties which the early leaders and inhabitants experienced in substituting a new social structure and a new spirit for the old 'hierarchy, hold days, etc.' which they undoubtedly hoped would be absent in the New England common-wealth. One might even see the story of early Sadbury as a type of local morality play, replete with Devil, Greed, and Ambition, opposed by both Faith and Prudence.

The time-span of this history is not as broad as I anticipated. From the title, I judged this would be a history of the town of Sudbury from its founding in the 17th century as a Puritan settlement through its transformation into the more prototypical New England town in the 18th and 19th centuries. The error of this assumption is the crux of Powell's argument. This history is confined to the 1600s, meticulously documenting the formation of the town of Sudbury, Massachusetts from its roots in England. Powell finds that the essence of the New England town - which he defines as "a respect for the orderly processes of law, an alertness to social justice, and desire to improve society by forming, ever and again, [and] self-governing .." (138) - in the 1600s inland settlement of towns such as Sudbury. An element of 1960s concern for American social order underwrites this text, as revealed in Powell's closing admonishment to not forsake "our New England heritage."

Well-done comparison of village dynamics in England and New England

Full disclosure: None of my relatives here, no connection in my ancestry to the towns mentioned. I am a historical genealogist researching the social, cultural, economic and political history of New England, so that I have a context to help me understand the lives of the people and families of the era I am working on. This book does a beautiful job of comparing villages in New England with their counterparts in England, and the dynamics at work. Many of the people mentioned lived in these specific villages on both sides of the Atlantic, and it is interesting to see how they adapted the emerging social consciousness of 17th century England to the different conditions of New England, where people of many backgrounds were forging new institutions and customs. Well done, with direct comparisons to illustrate how the changes manifested in the American villages. I found it an illuminating window into the development of early New England culture.

This was exactly what I was hoping to find between covers. I now have information about my first American ancestors I did not have before. I am enjoying the book, even though it is a bit of a puzzle to read.
