Elizabeth Geitz is an Episcopal priest, newspaper columnist, and author of six books on justice, spirituality, and women's perspectives on faith. An award-winning writer and popular speaker, she continues to work closely with Sister Jane Mankaa and the Good Shepherd Home Board in Cameroon, West Africa. The mother of two adult children, she lives in the Delaware Highlands of Pennsylvania with her husband, Michael.

There ARE Superheroes!

Every once in a while - not often - a book comes along that `speaks.' Throughout its pages the tale makes you cry, get mad, feel envy, feel like a spoiled brat, a redeemer, and want to simply get out of your chair and go save the world. You wish for a Superman cape (and the talents and skills he had, of course) so that in one fell swoop you can save the hundreds of thousands of children out there from poverty and pain. Unfortunately, Superman is a cartoon character - nothing but a creative spark in a man's mind. However, there are super humans, and in this book you meet one who will grab you by the heart, mind and soul.
Elizabeth Geitz is a woman who, with two other friends, decided to go on a journey. She is an Episcopalian priest and a woman who had adopted a boy from Cameroon. She wanted to see him, she wanted to make a difference in his life - as well as the other orphans that were located in the Good Shepherd Home Orphanage run by Superwoman, Sister Jane.
From the lush, green tropical countryside, past the banana plantations that look lovely and serene, to marketplaces that are so crowded no one can move - the three women traveled up the sides of mountains to reach this orphanage. They traveled with Sister Jane as she dealt with everything from a broken-down vehicle to bribery to checkpoints and men with machetes (and that was just on the ride there). Jane had a way of charming them all.
Jane Mankaa had her own torturous history with her family in West Africa before coming to America to get a handle on how to open the orphanage she wanted to create in her country. Upon her return, she struggled. She is a woman in a man's word. A Christian nun, she has to put up with everything from people stealing their electric cables to murder attempts on her life. People poison her - or try to - in order to get rid of the woman and her orphanage once and for all.
A steel will and a beautiful soul is not nearly a good enough description for Jane, but the reader meets the children within the walls of this orphanage - the location that is giving them a chance at life in a world where their parents are dying of AIDS, where they are starving, being abused and overlooked. The children tell their stories, as Elizabeth Geitz gives readers a look at her steps - a journey that everyone will give their whole hearts to.
There are over 50,000 children who have abandoned in West Africa. Most of their parents are dead from the AIDS virus, or the children themselves have been left for dead, abandoned, said to be unnecessary, and frankly it brings to mind the well-known saying: "There's no room at the inn." But one woman did don a cape. She doesn't want riches and a pat on the back, she wants to work every day to give these children a better life. And in the back of the book there is a way that all of us can support this truly amazing woman and her children.
"May We All Be One" is the motto of this orphanage, and after getting to know these children and their stories, I hope that motto can be adopted by us all.

It only takes a spark...

I worked with Elizabeth and saw a subtle change in her after her return from Cameroon. Clearly, Sister Jane and Good Shepherd changed her heart. I read the book because I wanted to read about Elizabeth's journey. Read in one sitting, I was in awe of how Sister Jane is so focused on what the Lord has called her to do, despite the roadblocks, often daunting, that are placed in her way. I was struck at how wise the children were for their age. Sister Jane and her sisters have given them hope and provide the love and encouragement to succeed in their lives.
Elizabeth shares the experience of journey with her friends interspersed with the children's stories. The contrast between the the women of privilege and the children who would have been forgotten melts away as We Are One is very apparent. I briefly met Sister Jane at our Diocesan Convention. A woman of cheer and warmth, the light of Christ shines in and around her.
This book is one of hope and I recommend it for anyone who has an interest in the children of Africa who are discarded because of circumstances beyond their control. The book is an easy read, well written and Elizabeth shares her faith so freely and joyfully. It may change YOUR life.

A call to action through grace

Elizabeth Geitz has written an inspirational "call to action". I purchased this book as I was intrigued to understand why Elizabeth would make this journey to Cameroon and what was her calling to continue to help Sister Jane with her ministry there. I devoured this beautifully written book (I prefer to call it a journal from the heart)in one sitting. It is a book that sheds light on the suffering of so many children in just one area on West Africa, at times while I read, I also wept. It is a book that examines how even the simplest expressions of love can change a life and most importantly for me, it proved that through love and fellowship, we really are all interconnected, that we are all stewards of one another. From Elizabeth's heart felt tale and Sister Jane's unending devotion to these children, I have been called to action personally. I feel excited that perhaps I too could make a difference in the lives of others as these amazing women have and continue to do. I highly recommend this book.
