a treasure trove of sound advice

This series of essays covers all the main issues: the differences between counselling and direction, the need for supervision, for keeping one's reading up to date and the importance of reflecting upon one's feelings during and after a session.
There is a useful chapter on male spirituality, especially since most of my directees are men
Also one about directing ordinands and clergy - which seems to have become an area of expertise for me.
Spiritual directors in the Eastern tradition are a charismatic ministry rather than deriving from Episcopal laying on of hands. So the fact that many lay people now undertake this role is OK.
`The Greek word for prayer, proseuche, means to hold on to, be intent on, devote oneself, to pay attention. `Attention' from the Latin ad tendere, means to stretch. To give the gift of our attention to God stretches us out of ourselves toward something beyond us.' p. 74
I thought - I need to be comfortable with silence in a conversation. You know you have the `gift' if. Long before you train, people tell you their stories - yes, people have. However, I have got bored with some people - they would be the ones I wouldn't take on.
Unusually, there is a section that deals with homeless people. Only slightly less unusual, a section dealing with people with dementia. Also on dealing with LGB people, which rarely gets mentioned in other books unless they are specifically devoted to the subject. The crass `love the sinner, hare the sin' is given short shrift and there is a useful list of specialist books on this subject. `Although Ignatius knew his qualms were doing him great harm, he did not, perhaps could not, act on this knowledge before. He was hanging on to a God who was an exacting taskmaster, almost a celestial accountant who was waiting to catch him out. He could nor believe in a God who wanted his peace and act on this belief Ignatius faced a choice. He may not have formulated it in terms of faith, but that is what it amounted to. Ultimately Ignatius had to decide what God he believed in. Here comes the breakthrough. When he chose not to confess his past sins, he had no guarantee that he was correct. He had to act in faith, hope and love that God was not an ogre ready to pounce on mistakes and forgotten sins.....asked to make an act of faith that God is not the author of their anxiety, that God wants their peace and contentment.' - William Barry

`Our dreams can provide a deeper source of truth for our hearts to ponder when our conscious minds become weary of analyzing and strategizing. Dreams are a profound way to listen for the voice of the sacred speaking to us.
`Spiritual direction teaches us to trust alternative ways of "knowing" ourselves and the sacred mystery within, about, and around us. Yet this is difficult for our rational, goal-oriented minds to grasp. When our cognitive side is caught napping, the mystery can begin to unfold.

`Some would suggest that God no longer speaks to humankind in such a "direct" way, yet all of us dream, And those who have done inner work know dream content is not random or nonsensical. Rather, the dream is a gift from God, revealing or encouraging movements toward healing and wholeness.
`It might be helpful to think of the dream as revealing soul energy. Whether or not we understand the significance of a dream, it works independently to establish balance within our unconscious.
`The symbolic content of the dream tells us that we are not in the realm of absolutes, for there is never only one meaning to a dream, If symbols have many meanings, then the material in our dreams will have multiple levels of meaning and relevance.
'There may be no such thing as totally unlocking the meaning of a dream once and for all. Like a good myth, it may speak to us differently at different times in our lives. Just as people return to certain scripture passages again and again, it is possible to return to a dream in the future and gain new insights about our inner truth. For those of us who like a more systematic approach to faith or our personalities, fluid and open interpretation of dreams is a humble reminder that life is ambiguous and sometimes contradictory. Paradoxes abound.
