Prayers and Meditiations for Lententide and Easter Week

For most Americans, the season of Lent (or Lententide), the 40 days stretching from Ash Wednesday to Maundy Thursday, is essentially a Roman Catholic affair. During this time, the faithful customarily "give up" something, be it sweets, smoking, swearing, or even sex! Lententide, with its constant calls of alms-giving and sacrifice, "thankfully" gives way to the more joyous and festive Easter season (or Eastertide).
In A Time to Turn: Anglican Readings for Lent and Easter Week, popular author and Episcopal priest Christopher L. Webber corrects the many misconceptions surrounding Lententide. First, Lent is not solely a Roman Catholic celebration. The 90 million members of the worldwide Anglican Communion, which includes the Church of England and the Episcopal Church USA, also celebrate this liturgical season, with its ancient practices of charity, prayer, and fasting. Secondly, Lent is not simply about abandoning (temporarily) some bad habit or practice. Rather, Fr. Webber notes, it is "a time to turn in a new direction, to turn away from the familiar routine of death and seek life, real life."
To assist the faithful in this process of "turning," Fr. Webber provides prayers and meditations for each day of Lententide and Easter Week. These are drawn from the rich heritage of Anglican/Episcopal spirituality, which often finds its most apt expression in poetry (Christina Rossetti and John Donne) or pastoral care (George Herbert and William Law). This book is a treasure for those who acknowledge Lent. "A Time to Turn" is a great collection of writings, sermon excerpts, and essays from Anglicans, applicable across any denominational lines. Excellent read.
