A new section discusses wave aberrations, with a comparison of the spherical aberration to the Seidel coefficient. A new chapter on thermal effects examines the design of athermats--lenses that compensate for undesired results caused by temperature excursions. A new chapter covers diamond turning, which is especially suitable for producing aspheres and diffractive infrared elements.

About the Author
Max J. Riedl has worked in the field of mathematical and optical instruments for decades and holds numerous patents for mechanical, optical, and electro-optical devices. A native of Germany, Riedl held technical and business leadership positions during the 45 years he lived in the United States. He teaches short courses and has published many papers on fundamental lens design, replicating optical elements, and diamond turning diffractive optical components for applications in the infrared spectrum. He currently resides in Bavaria, Germany, and is a fellow of SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.

Not what I'd expected

I wouldn't buy it. The material is very introductory, as in high school physics introductory. Despite what the title implied, it has very little information on Infrared Systems. Spend a bit more and get something else. Should have known from the price that it was too good to be true. If you really want it, contact me and I'll give it to you cheap. Just got it for a few days only.

Save your money

This is a very fundamental introduction to optics and unlike the misleading title has very little unique info for the Infrared optics designer. Save your money - if you just want a good introduction to lenses and mirror system design there are much better and cheaper sources available.
