Profound, thoughtful, moving engagements with scripture

"Across the Threshold" continues the deep engagement with New Testament texts that was exemplified in Caren Goldman's previous book (written with William Dols) "Discovering Jesus, Finding Self." This time Goldman teams up with her husband Ted Voorhees, and Episcopal priest, to offer their reflections on 16 texts chosen from the Gospels (including one from the Gospel of Thomas). For each text, they reflect autobiographically on the issues and challenges that the text raises for them personally, and then include parallel texts drawn from literature that, for them, illuminate those issues.
This is not "Bible Study" in the traditional sense. It is an invitation to live the stories, to make profound connections with your own life and the world around you. The readings are inspirational, but the goal is not inspiration, but transformation. Goldman and Voorhees draw on their experiences of life and death, cancer and healing, divorce and relationships; their self-revelation evokes laughter and tears from the deepest places within, invite serious self-discovery and open new possibility.

Inspiring - thought provoking- insightful- collaborative sharing of personal experiences that provoke introspection and a re-examination of values, goals, dreams- and how one's direction in life can abruptly change for a myriad of reasons; the personal stories are especially poignant- and cause one to ask again: why do bad things happen to good people; would love to use this book in group discussion- examining the many facets raised in each chapter- especially addressing the questions posed at the end of each vignette- definitely 5 star and a must read for anyone who is seeking an understanding of self.

I felt very close to this book - it was very hard to put down. The more I read the stories, the more personally involved I felt. It had a profound emotional, spiritual and intellectual affect on me and I look forward to reading it again. I have a feeling it will have a different affect on me depending on whatever I may be experiencing at the time I read it. Thank you for this fabulous addition to my library!
